Nature-based group activities can reduce feelings of loneliness, improve sleep and cognition, and increase a sense of connection to nature in older adults living in care homes. This nature-focused activity, which included field trips and interaction with the natural world, promoted well-being and health through peer support and activity content. Over a period of just nine weeks, weekly group activities have already been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness in study subjects, improve sleep and memory, and improve their sense of connection to nature. Our research also highlighted the need for older people in care homes to visit outdoor environments…

Kennedy Jr. laid off about 3,500 FDA employees. He is currently looking to hire more than 3,200 people, including reviewers and researchers. However, replacing the…
Tests aimed at pushing the limits of single-cell DNA sequencing have revealed something even more surprising. Microbes living in a pond in Oxford University Park appear to be using genetic code in a way scientists have never seen before. Dr. Jamie McGowan, a postdoctoral researcher at the Earlham Institute, was studying the genomes of protists from freshwater. The goal was realistic. The researchers wanted to test a DNA sequencing pipeline that could process very small amounts of DNA, including DNA from single cells. Instead, the team discovered unexpected genetic outliers. Organisms identified as: oligohymenophoria sp. PL0344 was found to be…
The boat ramp sits in the mud, stuck like a beached sea creature. Algae grows on exposed rocks. And the former fish spawning beds will dry out in the sun. It’s only early May, but the state’s fisheries biologists are already preparing anglers for a summer of low water and heat flow, slow fish movement and the potential for some waters, especially in the southeastern part of the state, to dry up completely. In fact, the water level forecast for this summer is so bad that the Wyoming Game and Fish Department issued a press release in April telling anglers…
Up to 2 centimeters on the moon: NASA tracks Mexico City as it sinks into the ground | Mexico
WStep into the vast heart of Mexico City pedestal It’s a dizzying experience. At the edge of the square, the capital’s cathedral, with its towering spire, leans in one direction. The attached church, known as the Metropolitan Sanctuary, leans to the opposite side. The nearby National Palace also seems unusual. The teetering of many of the capital’s historic buildings is the most visible sign of a phenomenon that has been going on for more than a century. Mexico City is sinking at an alarming rate. Now, one of the most powerful radar systems ever launched into space is tracking the metropolis’ descent…
A new study shows evidence that listening to familiar, predictable musical chord progressions while making eye contact with another person increases activity in parts of the brain associated with social interaction. This combination of music and eye contact also tends to make people feel more socially connected to each other. These findings recently neuroscience journal. The authors conducted this study to investigate the exact brain mechanisms that explain why music brings people together. Many people experience a sense of connection through music, but the biological processes behind this feeling are largely unknown. The main motivation was to explore how certain…
Within days of California’s long-awaited single-use plastics law taking effect, environmentalists and anti-waste activists announced plans to file a lawsuit. They argue that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration and CalRecycle inserted exemptions favorable to the plastics industry into the law’s regulations, weakening the plastics industry and undermining the intent of the legislation.“These new rules create a huge loophole for plastic packaging that violates the law,” said Avinash Kher, senior director of the Toxic Substances Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We plan to challenge this matter in court.”The lawsuit, which has not yet been filed, is supported by NRDC and the…
As a person ages, both the amount of fat in the body and where it is stored begin to change. Most of your body fat is subcutaneous, located just beneath your skin. This type of fat is generally harmless and is actually necessary for overall health. Visceral fat is different. It accumulates deep in the abdomen and surrounds internal organs, and is strongly associated with serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The role of hormones in dangerous fat gain Scientists have found that hormones, especially testosterone, play a key role in how fat is redistributed over time. “As…
The FDA attacked Alnylam in an untitled letter regarding Amvuttra’s consumer website, accusing the biotech company of presenting misleading open-label data about the drug’s effectiveness. A page on the website about how Amvuttra may help patients with transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy includes data from Helios-B, a phase 3 trial conducted by Alnylam to evaluate RNAi therapy. This trial compared Amvuttra to a placebo. After a three-year double-blind study period, Alnylam conducted an open-label extension study in which all participants, including those in the placebo group, were allowed to take Amvuttra. The website includes data from the double-blind period, as well as…
Eugene Braunwald, widely known as the “father of modern cardiology,” passed away on April 22nd at the age of 96. When I first learned of his death, I thought about the many conversations we had, especially about the two big visions he had for his career. His initial vision was to work with other scientists to successfully transform theory into practice for preventing heart attacks and minimizing damage to the heart muscle after an attack begins. He accomplished that, becoming the most important cardiologist of his generation and fundamentally changing daily medical care. The scandal may have made his already…
