The Global Virus Network (GVN), which represents renowned human and animal virologists from more than 90 centers of excellence and affiliates in more than 40 countries dedicated to advancing research, collaboration, and pandemic preparedness, is monitoring the SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.3.2, sometimes informally referred to as the “semi” variant in media reports, and stresses that current evidence does not indicate a cause for alarm or heightened public concern.

BA.3.2 is a sublineage of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 that is being tracked through the global genomic surveillance system. Initial analysis, including technical assessments by international public health authorities and new clinical studies, indicates that BA.3.2 exhibits antibody evasion properties, which are likely caused by mutations in the viral spike protein, the main target of the immune response. Immune escape may increase the likelihood of infection or reinfection, but it does not mean less protection against severe disease. These changes are consistent with the expected evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.

Importantly, there is currently no evidence that BA.3.2 is associated with increased disease severity or promotes sustained increases in population-level infections.

The term “cicada” is not a scientific name and has no biological relationship to insects. This is an informal nickname used in some media reports to describe the apparent re-emergence of the variant after a period of limited detection, and does not indicate a new mode of transmission or a fundamentally different type of virus.

    What this means for preparation

BA.3.2 emphasizes the importance of continued vigilance, rather than announcing new threats. Our main priorities remain:

    • Continuous monitoring of genomes and wastewater
    • Continuous monitoring of virus evolution and immune escape
    • Maintaining the readiness of medical and public health systems
    • Clear, evidence-based communication to the public

    Information for the general public

Individuals should continue to follow established public health guidance.

    • Stay up to date on recommended COVID-19 vaccinations
    • Take appropriate hygiene and respiratory precautions when appropriate
    • Get tested and seek medical advice if you have symptoms

Global Virus Network continues to monitor BA.3.2 and other emerging variants and will provide updates as additional data becomes available.
