Trump administration officials have argued that coal is more reliable than solar power because it can generate electricity 24 hours a day. But even with that advantage, Texas’ coal-fired power plants can’t keep up with the annual and monthly total production from rapidly growing solar installations. This did not compromise the reliability of the power grid. arcot We meet nighttime demands with a diverse portfolio that includes gas plants, nuclear power, wind power, and batteries that store all excess solar power for use when the sun stops shining.

Of course, Texas leaders did not set out to disprove the Trump administration’s energy claims. The maverick Lone Star State keeps its power system out of the hands of federal regulators; 1990and fast 2000Reformed it to promote free market competition instead of centralized planning by monopolies. This market, combined with vast amounts of space and lax building regulations, creates an ideal environment for wind, solar, and batteries to thrive. Now, Texas is beefing up with dozens of gigawatts of new capacity to combat heatwaves and price hikes.

Red-hot Texas offers a lesson for liberal states that have set lofty climate goals but have so far failed to build solar power and battery storage. While we cannot immediately switch to an ERCOT-style market, we can take steps to reduce the time it takes to obtain permits and grid connections, lower the level of deference to habitually conservative traditional power companies, and ensure that clean energy is on a level playing field in the race to meet burgeoning energy demand. And it’s always a good time to revisit old market rules that subtly privilege entrenched players at the expense of new entrants who produce cheaper, cleaner electricity.

After rapidly increasing solar power generation, EIA I’m looking forward to it arcot produce 99 1 billion kilowatt hours of solar power 2027top 27% from 2026. At that point, the emerging industry will leave established coal competition in the dust.
