If you’re an older adult, getting the shingles vaccine may lower your risk of developing dementia.
A new study found that residents of elderly care facilities who received at least one dose of the shingles vaccine, known as Shingrix, the only shingles vaccine available in the United States, were 24 percent less likely to develop dementia over a four-year period than those who did not receive the vaccine, according to results published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
This study adds to growing evidence of a link between viral infections and cognitive decline.
