It was a skit worthy of an Agatha Christie mystery novel reveal. To the joyful backdrop of a jazz-inspired “Procession of the Saints,” a group of health IT professionals and Medicare employees were accompanied by Spirit’s Halloween-style coffin props on stage at the Health and Human Services headquarters on Monday. Some wore black veils, others held white roses.

The words “RIP CLIPBOARD” are written on the coffin, a reference to what has been a staple of information gathering in medical provider waiting rooms for decades.

“So who killed the clipboard?” asked Zach Ziwa, a federal Medicare official. Health IT officials and experts denied that the clue cards were part of a wide range of health data initiatives that private industry promised Medicare a year ago to improve, including standards implementation, health information exchange networks, electronic health records and apps.
