A 1-year longitudinal study showed that adoption of the religious coping strategy “surrender to God” was associated with nearly three times lower odds of substance use relapse in Christian patients over a 1-year period, when use of this strategy was measured using an implicit association task. However, when adoption of this coping strategy was explicitly measured, the likelihood of relapse was only slightly reduced after 1 month, but not at 6 and 12 month assessments. The paper is addictive behavior report. Surrender to God is a religious coping strategy in substance use disorder recovery in which people give up their…

A large-scale study published in BMJ Aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, has been suggested to be the most effective form of exercise for people with knee osteoarthritis. These activities were found to have the greatest improvement in pain, physical function, walking ability, and overall quality of life. Researchers note that while other types of exercise can be effective, they should be used in conjunction with aerobic exercise, rather than replacing it as the main approach. Causes of knee osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually breaks down. This causes pain, swelling,…
State insurance regulators are working on the most comprehensive analysis of the nation’s blighted real estate insurance market to understand how climate change is affecting the price and availability of coverage. Insurers are ordered to submit internal records showing claims and losses caused by wildfires, storms and other perils in each ZIP code in which they sell insurance. Data collection is overseen by a national organization of state insurance commissioners, which has been reluctant to collect such precise information in the past, but now wants to understand the severity of the growing property and casualty insurance crisis. “We literally do…
The FDA reprimanded Bayer for “attention-grabbing visuals” and “frequent scene changes” in ads for its prostate cancer drug Nubeca. FDA officials expressed their concerns in an untitled letter (PDF) after reviewing a direct-to-consumer (DTC) YouTube video and Nubeka’s Spanish-language television ads. The FDA ruled that Bayer’s promotional materials were false or misleading because they claimed the benefits of Nubeka but omitted risk information about the drug. Bayer included a statement saying, “Nubeka can cause serious side effects, including heart disease and seizures.” However, the FDA flagged additional details that were included in the patient information but not included in the…
Psychologists have long debated whether the human mind can be explained by a single unifying theory, or whether different functions such as attention and memory need to be studied separately. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) is entering that discussion, offering new ways to explore how the mind works. In July 2025, a study was published in July 2025. nature We introduced an AI model called “Centaur”. Built on standard large-scale language models and refined using data from psychology experiments, Centaur was designed to simulate human cognitive behavior. It reportedly performed well across 160 tasks including decision-making, business management, and other mental…
Study finds gold mining strongly associated with psychopathy and dark personality traits
Recent psychological research suggests that gold digging is not simply a gender-based stereotype, but rather a calculated social strategy associated with traits such as psychopathy and narcissism. This finding provides evidence that people who engage in this behavior are willing to sacrifice emotional intimacy in order to extract economic resources from their partners. This study was published in the journal personality and individual differences. Scientists Lennart Fries and Peter K. Jonasson designed this study to understand the psychological motivations behind highly materialistic dating behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is often described in numbers: it affects millions of people, the number of cases is rapidly increasing, and the costs reach trillions of dollars. But for families, the experience is deeply personal. “It’s a slow bereavement,” says Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory professor Nicholas Tonks, whose mother has Alzheimer’s disease. “You lose that person little by little.” A major focus of Alzheimer’s disease research is plaque buildup in the brain. These plaques are composed of amyloid beta (Aβ), a naturally formed peptide that can accumulate and cluster over time. These deposits are widely believed to play an important role…
