The American Medical Association (AMA) has rolled out a comprehensive framework to protect physicians from deepfakes generated by unauthorized artificial intelligence. The guide was created by the organization’s Center for Digital Health and AI and aims to modernize physician identity protection while closing legal gaps. The AMA uses the term “augmented intelligence” when referring to AI to emphasize its complementary role in healthcare. The framework is based on seven policy principles. Physician identity as a protected right. Prohibition of false medical misrepresentation. Informed, opt-in, and revocable consent. Mandatory transparency and labeling. Share the responsibility of preventing identity theft. Enforcement and…
New research from the University of Sydney shows older Australians who reduce either dietary fat or animal protein show signs of decreasing biological age. Published in aged cellsthe results revealed that people aged 65 to 75 who received just four weeks of dietary intervention showed a decline in their ‘biological age’ based on their biomarker profiles. The study, led by Dr Caitlin Andrews from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney, highlights the potential for dietary interventions to rapidly improve health and aging outcomes in older people. This provides a preliminary indication rather than a…
Garlic is not a substance that most people consider to be an aphrodisiac. It turns out the mosquitoes agree too. In fact, a new study from Yale University found that garlic also acts as a de facto contraceptive for mosquitoes and other winged insects, an insight that could lead to eco-friendly pest control strategies. Research by John Carlson’s lab at Yale University shows that there are garlic blocks that mate with mosquitoes and various fly species. Researchers have discovered that it’s not the pungent odor that these pests dislike, but the taste. The reason lies in the receptors inside their…
President Trump suggested Monday that the federal government could move toward approving some forms of 7-OH, an opioid derived from the naturally occurring kratom plant. “We’re looking at natural 7-OH very seriously and we’re trying to get it approved,” President Trump said. It was not clear what Trump meant by “natural 7-OH.” This compound, short for 7-hydroxymitragynine, is found naturally in small amounts in kratom and is increasingly used as a recreational drug and unapproved pain treatment. Although kratom is significantly less dangerous than powerful synthetic opioids like fentanyl and prescription painkillers, it can still cause addiction and overdose. STAT+…
Prefrontal cortex brain activity explains the relationship between decision-making bias and mental resilience
Whether people are pondering the pros and cons of a purchase or evaluating an interaction with a new person, they can exhibit a bias toward giving more weight to information that is perceived as positive or negative. new JNeurosci In this paper, Ulrike Basten from RPTU-University Kaiserslautern-Landau and the University of Amsterdam and colleagues investigated whether individual differences in the benefits and costs of processing are associated with psychological resilience. The researchers presented 82 participants with images of shapes in different colors. Colors and shapes were associated with profits and losses that translated into actual money and expenses at the…
Incarcerated immigrants have been shown to have a lower risk of criminal behavior than native-born nationals
Research shows that immigrants in prison have fewer personal risk factors for crime and shorter criminal histories than mainland-born nationals. This suggests that policies targeting immigrants as a unique threat to public safety are based on inaccurate stereotypes. The findings were published in the journal Psychology, Public Policy, and Law. In U.S. public discourse, immigrants are routinely portrayed as a serious danger to public safety. Rhetoric around border security often paints immigrants as potential perpetrators of violence. However, sociological research consistently contradicts this theory. Studies have shown that immigrants are actually less likely to break the law than U.S.-born people.…
We are all born completely helpless, with little knowledge or skills needed to survive as adults. Our communication skills are also learned almost entirely from our parents and caregivers. There are also similar animals. Researchers often study zebra finches to better understand how humans develop language, especially because the way zebra finches learn to communicate is very similar to humans. To answer these questions, Princeton University’s Stephen Elmlinger will present research on early vocalizations in both human infants and zebra finches on Monday, May 11th at 1pm ET as part of the 190th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America,…
Although bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder share similar depressive and cognitive symptoms, their biological underpinnings are different. New research appearing in Biological psychiatry: cognitive neuroscience and neuroimagingThe paper, published by Elsevier, identifies for the first time clinically relevant pathways linking metabolic dysfunction, brain structure and cognition in mood disorders, with stronger and more specific effects observed in bipolar disorder. This highlights the potential of targeting metabolic pathways to improve cognitive symptoms in bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder cause mental illness and severely impair mood regulation and biological rhythms. Even if your mood is stable, continued challenges…
FDA’s policy on e-cigarettes is called a ‘get-out-of-jail-free card’ for manufacturers
The tobacco industry scored another victory Friday with a new policy announced by the Food and Drug Administration that would give some manufacturers of illegal e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches what one expert called a “get-out-of-jail-free card.” The FDA has a large backlog of applications from manufacturers of e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches seeking permission to sell their products. Some people go ahead and sell their products while they wait to hear back from their distributors. In the new guidance, first reported by The New York Times, authorities said they would not prioritize cracking down on illegal sales under two conditions. Why…
Testosterone myth? Large-scale analysis finds no association between ‘macho’ hormones and risk-taking
A meta-analysis of 52 studies found no association between testosterone levels and risk-taking. In general, only studies in which participants completed specific lottery-based economic tasks showed modest associations between testosterone levels and risk-taking, whereas other types of behavioral studies did not show such results. Furthermore, the lack of association did not depend on participant gender. The paper was published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. Testosterone is a hormone that belongs to a group of hormones called androgens. It is present in both men and women, but is usually seen at much higher levels in men. In men, testosterone is primarily…
