This month, ESA’s Mars Express mission is spotlighting the Sharbatana Valley, a massive Martian canyon marked by evidence of ancient water, volcanic activity, impact craters, and collapsed terrain. Located near the Martian equator, the Charvatana Gorges span approximately 1,300 kilometers (1,300 kilometers) of Mars’ total length, which is roughly the length of Italy. The latest images from the spacecraft’s High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) focus on the northern portion of the valley that winds through the Martian landscape. In October 2025, Mars Express also released a video tour of this remarkable region, following the path of this valley from its source…
Researchers at Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center have identified a mechanism that may help explain a key reason why older adults experience worse outcomes from breast cancer. This study implicates RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products), a cell surface receptor that amplifies inflammatory signaling, and this receptor becomes further activated as metastasis progresses. Our study addresses a major gap by showing that breast cancer metastasis increases dramatically with age and that this effect is dependent on RAGE, a cell surface receptor that promotes inflammation. Because most laboratory studies rely on young mice, there is limited understanding of how…
Can a mother’s workplace before and during pregnancy influence her child’s neurodevelopment? A large Danish study has linked several occupational categories, including transport and defense jobs, to higher odds of autism diagnosis in children, raising new questions about toxic exposure, stress and prenatal health. More than 20,000 patients from three major National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies were included in a new analysis showing that elevated lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) is associated with ongoing cardiovascular risk, even in people receiving standard treatment. The findings suggest that patients with elevated Lp(a) levels may need to manage their heart disease risk factors more aggressively. The researchers presented their latest results at the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2026 Scientific Sessions and the Canadian Society of Interventional Cardiology/Consortium on Cardiac Interventions (CAIC-ACCI) Summit in Montreal. Lp(a) is a cholesterol-carrying particle present in the bloodstream. It is…
Alternative therapies that help the body’s immune system fight bacteria have shown promise in addressing the global threat of antibiotic resistance. Researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered that when attacked, the body’s immune cells activate a cellular process called ‘mitochondrial fission’ to kill the invading bacteria. Dr James Carson, from the UQ Institute of Molecular Biosciences, said mitochondrial fission is a key process in which mitochondria within cells split into smaller units to support the body’s response to stress such as infection. Some bacteria have evolved strategies to prevent activation of the mitochondrial fission process, allowing invading…
A company aiming to make billions of dollars by cooling the planet has lifted the veil of secrecy that has kept it hidden from plans to prevent sunlight from overheating the planet. It relies on aerosol particles that are 125 times smaller than the smallest grain of sand. Stardust Solutions has raised $75 million since 2023 from investors betting that global warming will get out of control and governments may decide to pay Israeli and American startups to spray millions of tons of sunlight-reflecting aerosols into the stratosphere. The plan was so closely guarded that scientists had to sign non-disclosure…
Superspreading has become a familiar concept to many during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous studies of infectious disease outbreaks, including the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), have found that some people are much more likely to infect others. Superspreading, where one person with an infectious disease infects an unusually large number of others, is a key feature of tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology. Most people with tuberculosis are a disease caused by infection. Mycobacterium tuberculosisrarely causes secondary infections, and often causes no secondary infections at all. However, many studies, including landmark studies in the 1950s and 1960s that investigated tuberculosis transmission, have observed that some…
Classic psychology research on the calming effects of nature has received a major update
New research published in Journal of Environmental Psychology This suggests that watching videos of natural environments, such as forests, can help people recover from stress more effectively than watching videos of urban environments. The results of this study provide evidence that images of nature can positively influence a person’s emotional state. This provides an easy way to support mental health in spaces where real nature is out of reach. Scientists conducted this study to test the reliability of a highly influential experiment conducted in 1991. That old experiment introduced the idea that simply looking at natural scenery could help the…
One of the biggest challenges in aging and disease research is tracking senescent cells. These cells, often referred to as “zombie cells,” stop dividing but do not die normally. Over time, they can accumulate in the body and are thought to be linked to conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and the aging process itself. Scientists have been researching ways to remove or repair these harmful cells, but there have been major hurdles. Researchers have struggled to reliably identify senescent cells hidden among healthy cells in living tissues. DNA aptamers help researchers identify senescent cells A Mayo Clinic team now…
Democrats and Republicans currently agree on virtually nothing except the dire need to build more housing in the United States. Depending on your perspective, this country needs new housing to put people to work and boost local economies, or to build affordable housing to lower housing costs and thereby reduce homelessness. Affordability, including housing, is currently one of America’s biggest political issues. But neither party is talking about the hidden superpowers of the new apartment complexes. That’s far better for the planet than building single-family homes. According to a new report, these units are “a form of near-automatic construction.” decarbonizationBecause…
