Older adults with depression are almost five times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease
A longitudinal study of older adults in China found that those with depression were almost five times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those without depression. The risk of developing vascular dementia was 1.9 times higher. The paper is psychiatric research. Dementia is a general term that refers to a group of neurocognitive disorders characterized by declines in memory, thinking, and daily functioning. Although the risk of developing dementia clearly increases with age, it is not a normal part of aging. This is caused by underlying brain pathology, such as neurodegeneration, vascular damage, and abnormal protein accumulation. The most…
A new system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to assess cardiovascular risk based on images of the eyes taken during eye exams demonstrated strong correlations with standard cardiovascular risk assessments, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Sessions (ACC.26). Researchers said using AI to screen for heart disease risk during routine eye exams could make more people aware of their risk and encourage referrals for preventive treatment. Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Primary care providers and cardiologists use risk calculators to estimate a patient’s risk for atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the…
Astrophysicists at Rutgers University are helping investigate a strange cosmic phenomenon that astronomers continue to search for answers to. At the heart of the mystery is an unusually powerful explosion in the universe that lasted much longer than anything previously observed. NASA announced that researchers used the James Webb Space Telescope to study GRB 250702B, a long gamma-ray burst and one of the most energetic types of phenomena in the universe. These bursts typically occur when a massive star collapses into a black hole, producing a short, intense flash of high-energy gamma rays. This event behaved completely differently. “This object…
JANESVILLE, Wis. — On a polluted and abandoned parcel of land in this southern Wisconsin city, all that remains is a General Motors factory that was a proud symbol of American auto manufacturing half a century ago. However, a new industry, artificial intelligence, may soon be born there. A Colorado-based real estate and investment firm has proposed buying the 250-acre site, cleaning it up and building a massive $8 billion data center campus. This is a test case for the Trump administration’s plan to force this generation of industrial giants to pay for the mistakes of the previous generation. The…
John Beard doesn’t like being right. In January, he told Capital B that he was concerned that U.S. military action in Venezuela could result in giving the U.S. preferential access to the South American country’s vast oil reserves, leading to a disaster in southeast Texas. “The chickens have come home to roost,” Beard said by phone between fielding calls from neighbors. “Exactly what we feared has come true.” On March 23, an explosion at the Valero Port Arthur refinery shook homes 11 miles away and sent thick black plumes of smoke over the majority-black city. Days later, people in Port…
A one-year substudy presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Meeting (ACC.26) found that despite significant reductions in triglycerides, patients with triglycerides above 150 mg/dL and at high risk for atherosclerosis did not see a significant change in the amount of noncalcified plaque in their coronary arteries after taking the triglyceride-lowering drug olearsen. Triglycerides are fat particles in the blood. Elevated triglyceride levels (known as hypertriglyceridemia) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, but so far treatments designed to lower triglycerides have not had a clear effect on reducing the risk of serious cardiac events. In contrast, treatments that…
About 66 million years ago, two long-necked, four-legged dinosaurs stood out from other sauropods. They had the ability to stand up on their hind legs and remain upright for long periods of time. This posture probably helped them reach the higher leaves of trees and may have made them appear larger and more intimidating to predators. Brazil’s Uberabatitan and Argentina’s Neuquensaurus were about the same size as modern elephants. Although considered small compared to other sauropods, an adult Uberabatitan may have reached 26 meters in length, making it the largest dinosaur known from Brazil. However, the ability to remain upright…
Since the beginning of this century, the expansion of solar power has exceeded expectations more than any other energy source. Once extremely expensive and only used in remote locations, space travel, or pocket calculators, today’s solar modules are easy to set up and operate, and are generating cheap electricity around the world. Global solar energy capacity has increased rapidly over the past decade. – 228 GW in 2015, providing 1% of the world’s electricity- 759 GW in 2020, or about 3% of global energy demand- According to estimates, 2,919 GW in 2025 – Currently, solar power supplies about 10% of…
New study finds that relying on AI chatbots for historical facts can influence political beliefs
Recent research published in PNAS Nexus Reading summaries of history generated by artificial intelligence suggests that people’s social and political opinions can subtly shift. This study shows that popular chatbots have hidden biases that can influence users, even when the software provides factually accurate information in response to neutral questions. These findings provide evidence that relying on AI to learn about the world can silently shape public attitudes. Generative AI refers to computer programs that can create new text, images, or audio based on patterns learned from vast amounts of data. Chatbots like ChatGPT are a common type of this…
A new large-scale analysis identifies knee braces, hydrotherapy, and exercise as the most effective non-pharmacological treatments for managing knee osteoarthritis. This finding comes from a meta-analysis published in an open access journal pro swan. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a widespread and often disabling condition that affects millions of older adults. This causes ongoing pain and stiffness in the knee joint, making daily activities difficult. Many patients rely on anti-inflammatory drugs, but these drugs can come with risks, including gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects. Large-scale study comparing 12 non-drug treatments To better understand which non-drug treatments are most effective, researchers analyzed…
