President Trump’s budget proposal proposes deep cuts to climate and environmental programs
President Trump’s annual budget request to Congress continues the administration’s defunding of climate change programs, environmental protection, and renewable energy, and cuts the budgets of the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Federal Emergency Management Agency. The fiscal year 2027 spending plan “builds on the president’s vision by keeping non-defense spending in check,” Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought said in a preface to the 92-page document, which includes a historic $1.5 trillion defense budget increase of 44%. Under President Trump’s proposal announced Friday, EPA spending would be cut in half and grants from the…
Gov. Tony Evers signed a pair of bills Monday that will commit $133 million in state funding to combat PFAS contamination across Wisconsin. The Republican-authored bill passed the Senate in March after years of back-and-forth between the governor and Republican lawmakers over how to spend PFAS funds, which were first included in the 2023-2025 state budget. This compromise protects farmers, some businesses, and other “innocent landowners” from being held responsible for PFAS contamination they did not cause. We’re also allocating $80 million in community grants for testing and remediation efforts. Let’s understand Wisconsin together. WPR’s “Wisconsin Today” newsletter helps you…
Although drinking coffee or tea directly improves daytime alertness, it does not appear to inherently interfere with the quantity or quality of nighttime sleep over the long term. A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research used genetic data to find that caffeine intake primarily reduces daytime napping and sleepiness, rather than causing insomnia. The findings suggest that the common nighttime sleep disturbances associated with caffeinated beverages may be due to other lifestyle factors rather than caffeine itself. Most people regularly consume some form of caffeine to start their morning. This chemical is widely recognized as a stimulant that…
A national Danish study found that while influenza can sharply increase the short-term risk of heart attack and stroke, prior vaccination is associated with a significantly lower excess risk for those who remain infected. Study: Influenza vaccination reduces the risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke after influenza infection: a registry-based self-administered case series study, Denmark, 2014-2025. Image credit: Halfpoint / Shutterstock In a recent registry-based study published in the journal euro monitoringResearchers investigated the short-term risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke after laboratory-confirmed influenza. This study utilized a self-controlled case series (SCCS) design to analyze data from…
Key cholesterol guidelines were released just as pivotal new trial data was released, revealing that rapidly evolving evidence may soon change LDL goals and prevention strategies for high-risk patients. Image credit: Ridersuperone / Shutterstock recent guidelines and accompanying it editor A paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) highlighted that scientific discoveries can outpace the development of guidelines. The American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) employ rigorous methodologies to develop clinical practice guidelines. They aim to produce the highest quality guidelines that are timely, clinically relevant, reliable, transparent, and accessible. Therefore,…
Extreme social withdrawal is increasingly recognized as a problem among young people around the world. Recent research suggests that a person’s ability to cope with stress blocks the path from symptoms of depression to severe isolation. The study was published in the journal BMC Psychology. The term hikikomori originated in Japan in the late 1990s. This refers to a state in which people intentionally withdraw from their daily lives. People with this condition are often confined to their homes and bedrooms for six months or more. Initially, experts thought this behavior was unique to Japanese culture. Recent global data paint…
Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a new method to identify which proteins are most likely to trigger an immune response. This discovery could help improve transplant medicine, regenerative medicine, and other fields in which the immune system plays an important role. The result is biomaterials, They challenge the field’s common assumption that all proteins are equally likely to trigger an immune response. Some proteins can cause very strong reactions even when only small amounts are left, while others are less of a problem. This provides a clearer roadmap for designing safer and more durable biomaterials. ” Dr. Lee…
Mayo Clinic researchers develop experimental nanotherapy to treat aggressive brain cancer
Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an experimental nanotherapy that delivers two anti-cancer drugs directly to brain tumors, according to a study published today. communication medicine. This strategy extended survival in preclinical models of glioblastoma, the most aggressive of brain tumors. This nanotechnology-based approach packages two existing cancer drugs into small particles designed to cross the brain’s protective blood-brain barrier and target tumor cells. In preclinical models using patient-derived tissue, the combination of therapy and radiation more than doubled survival compared to untreated controls. Glioblastoma is notoriously difficult to treat. Even with modern treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, patients…
For decades, scientists have carefully elucidated the role of genes in disease by examining how subtle differences in a person’s genetic information affect their lifetime risk of developing common diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. But genetics are only part of the story. The rest comes from all the external and internal exposures a person experiences during their lifetime, from pollution to infections to diet and lifestyle. Cumulatively, these exposures and the body’s biological response to them make up what scientists call an exposome. A team led by scientists at Harvard Medical School has now conducted what is…
Since acquiring rare disease specialist Horizon Therapeutics for $27.8 billion in 2023, Amgen has struggled to grow sales of its biggest acquisition, the thyroid eye disease (TED) treatment Tepezza. But with a new patient-friendly route of administration, a California biotech company may have found a way to increase demand for Tepezza, the only drug on the market to treat inflammatory exophthalmia. A phase 3 study in patients with moderate to severe TED showed that subcutaneous injection of Tepezza via systemic injector (OBI) can provide comparable performance to current routes of administration, which include eight intravenous (IV) infusions (each lasting 60…
