Exposure to wildfire smoke was associated with a significantly increased risk of lung, colorectal, breast, bladder, and blood cancers, according to research presented at the 2026 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, held April 17-22. Wildfire smoke (WFS) is known to contain a wide range of toxins, including carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, but the systemic effects of WFS in real-world settings, particularly regarding cancer incidence, remain unclear, said Qizhen Wu, Ph.D., lead author of this presentation and postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Wu explained that the toxic compounds…
Early onset of myocarditis after immunotherapy is associated with increased risk of death
Patients who developed myocarditis within the first month of treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors were more likely to die from myocarditis, and death from myocarditis was more common in patients who had both myositis and myasthenia gravis, according to study results presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2026, held April 17-22. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have ushered in a new era of cancer immunotherapy, but in rare cases they can cause myocarditis, which in some cases is more likely to cause immediate death than the cancer they are intended to treat, explained Hassan M. Abushcare,…
Millions of Americans are still battling potentially deadly hepatitis C, even though it can be cured without antiviral drugs, a new analysis finds. Dr. Sanjay Kishore, a researcher at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and colleagues at the Massachusetts General Brigham looked at prescribing trends for the drug, known as a direct-acting antiviral. They found that prescriptions rose rapidly in 2013, when the drug was first introduced, and peaked in 2015. After that, usage began to decline, and has declined sharply in recent years. Researchers warn that this alarming trend threatens both the health of many Americans and…
There is a possibility that previously unknown substances exist deep inside icy giant planets such as Uranus and Neptune. This possibility comes from a new computer simulation conducted by Carnegie scientists Kong Liu and Ronald Cohen. Their research is nature communicationssuggest that under the intense pressures and temperatures found far below the surfaces of these distant planets, hydrogenated carbon can assume an unusual quasi-one-dimensional superionic state. Why is the planet’s interior important? More than 6,000 exoplanets have been discovered so far, and the number continues to grow. Researchers in astronomy, planetary science, and earth science are increasingly collaborating to better…
By examining common genes in three disparate species – axolotls, mice and zebrafish – scientists have discovered the potential for new gene therapies that could ultimately be used to regenerate human limbs, according to a new study published this week. “This important study brought together three laboratories and worked across three organisms to compare regeneration,” said Josh Currie, assistant professor of biology at Wake Forest. The same laboratory studies the Mexican axolotl salamander. “It showed that there is a universal, unifying genetic program that drives reproduction in very different species, such as salamanders, zebrafish, and mice.” The study, published in…
Oral GLP-1 tracker: Follow the launch trajectory of Lilly’s Foundayo, Novo’s Wegovy tablets
With the recent launches of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill and Eli Lilly’s Foundayo, the obesity market is beginning to shift toward oral GLP-1 drugs. While Novo is leveraging first-mover advantage with its familiar Wegovy brand, Lilly is betting that freedom from strict fasting and fluid restriction could give Foundayo an advantage. Each week, Fierce Pharma’s Oral GLP-1 Tracker leverages analyst notes and IQVIA data to monitor prescription trends and market share changes as these two giants compete to become the go-to oral weight loss solution for millions. Updated: April 21, 2026 Eli Lilly’s oral GLP-1 Foundayo had a successful launch,…
A federal judge in Massachusetts sided with renewable energy developers Tuesday in a challenge to Trump administration actions targeting wind and solar projects, blocking the administration from enforcing decisions that advocates say are slowing project development across the country. U.S. District Judge Dennis Casper, an Obama appointee, said in his order that the plaintiffs are likely to succeed on the merits, arguing that the administration’s actions violated the Administrative Procedure Act and that without relief they would “suffer imminent and irreparable harm.” The order comes as the administration has already lost several court cases over a number of cross-agency actions…
Supportive relationships in early childhood can help buffer the long-term health effects of abuse
Having a consistent, caring adult in childhood can make a big difference for children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse. it is, Journal of Aggression, Abuse and Traumainvestigated health outcomes in more than 2,100 American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults in the United States. Using nationally representative data from the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 2021 to 2023, researchers found that childhood maltreatment was strongly associated with a variety of negative physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood, including depression, arthritis, stroke, asthma, cognitive impairment, and obesity. However, the presence of a protective adult in…
In June 2024, a group of Penn State meteorology and atmospheric science researchers set out on a road trip along the East Coast in a modified 2013 Toyota Sienna. The van was equipped with a custom-built telescoping weather instrument that extended from the roof. Their goal was to track summer thunderstorms that occur almost daily in Florida and observe a phenomenon never seen before outside the laboratory. This phenomenon, known as corona discharge, involves the generation of small bursts of electricity at the tips of leaves. These weak electrical pulses can cause the treetops to emit a subtle glow in…
People with hostile personality traits, such as being manipulative and cruel, tend to judge immoral people more leniently than the average person. However, a new study has been published in a journal. personality and individual differences Hostile people still find immoral individuals less physically attractive, suggesting that there are clear boundaries to this tolerance. This provides evidence that hostile individuals are fully capable of recognizing moral shortcomings but may evaluate bad behavior less harshly in order to protect their self-image. Hostile personality traits, sometimes referred to as dark personality traits, represent a broad category of self-centered behaviors such as aggression,…
