Prescribing medicine to patients is just one step in improving their health. Ensuring patients begin and continue treatment is an important part of the process. From prescribing to long-term medication adherence, wide gaps continue to exist in patient experiences. Many life sciences companies find that efforts to engage and support patients after a drug is prescribed remain inadequate due to siled data, disparate systems, and poor collaboration. Courier Health launched a biopharmaceutical-specific artificial intelligence-powered platform in 2022 that manages the end-to-end patient journey from education to patient enrollment, benefits, prior authorization, treatment initiation and adherence. The company says Courier Health’s…
Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that circulate in the bloodstream, serve as part of the body’s first responders to infection and inflammation. When the immune system is activated, its number increases rapidly and the balance between neutrophils and other immune cells changes. Doctors can measure this balance using a standard test called the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). This number is routinely calculated from a complete blood count, a common test used to detect infections and assess immune health. A new study from NYU Langone Health suggests this simple measurement may do more than reflect current illness. It could also…
Novartis is partnering with dancer, choreographer and television personality Carrie Ann Inaba to launch a new disease awareness campaign for Sjögren’s syndrome. Sjögren’s disease is a disease in which the patient’s glands, which normally produce body fluids such as tears and saliva, stop working properly. Sjögren’s syndrome can have a variety of symptoms, but common ones include dry eyes and mouth, muscle and joint pain, and extreme fatigue. Inaba, 58, is familiar with the disease since she was diagnosed in 2013. She is currently lending her voice to Novartis’ “Sjöut for Sjögren’s” campaign and will be featured in a new…
Confronting 2026 Public Health Challenges: Trends, Threats, and the Path to Resilience
Epidemiologists, government health officials, and global health NGO leaders face mounting pressures in 2026. Explore public health trends, infectious disease threats, outbreak preparedness, and strategic policies for resilience and better community health outcomes.
A person’s natural brain wave patterns may provide a reliable preview of how violently they will react to a dose of psilocybin. Not only does resting brain electrical activity change dramatically during a psychedelic experience, but specific patterns that exist before drug ingestion actively predict subsequent psychological effects. The study was published in Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry. Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, is currently presumed to be a therapeutic agent and is being intensely researched. Clinical trials are testing its effectiveness against depression, addictive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Australia recently approved a drug to treat…
Artificial intelligence startup Amperos Health continues to use AI to automate revenue cycle management, raising $16 million in Series A funding. Bessemer Venture Partners led the Series A round, with participation from Uncork Capital and Neo. Sofia Guerra, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, told Fierce Healthcare that the company recognized that AI would be a “huge driver of automation” for RCM processes, adding that Amperos stands out for its quality, technical approach and results. “When you’re on the phone with a customer and their reviews are rave, that’s what you really pay attention to,” Guerra said. “Ampelos had a…

Fatty liver disease, which is associated with metabolic dysfunction, is currently the most common liver disease worldwide, affecting approximately one in three adults. It occurs when excess fat accumulates within liver cells, which can lead to severe liver damage and an increased risk of death from heart and blood vessel disease. Recent research from the University of Barcelona suggests that breakthroughs could be made using drugs that are already available. Researchers found that two drugs, pemafibrate and telmisartan, were able to significantly reduce liver fat in animal models of the disease. Even more encouraging, the two appear to not only…
Recent research published in evolutionary psychology Our findings suggest that intelligence in young men is positively related to physical characteristics such as grip strength and masculine body shape. At the same time, this study provides evidence that higher intelligence tends to lead to less sexual activity. These findings support the idea that cognitive ability and physical health may reflect underlying general fitness factors, while also leading smarter men to more monogamous relationship strategies. This new research was motivated by the idea of a general human fitness factor. There are concepts in evolutionary biology that suggest that overall genetic disposition is…
Magnetic materials thought to host quantum spin liquids are of intense interest because of their potential to reveal exotic states of matter and advance quantum computing. However, appearances in the quantum world can be misleading. New research published in scientific progress Rice University’s Pengcheng Dai and colleagues have shown that cerium magnesium hexaaluminate (CeMgAl11O19), once thought to belong to this rare category, is not actually a quantum spin liquid. “Two properties classified this material as a quantum spin liquid: the observation of a continuum of states and the lack of magnetic order,” said co-first author Bing Gao, a researcher at…
