The University of California, San Diego today announced the creation of the Applied Medical Intelligence Institute, an interdisciplinary hub aimed at leveraging the latest digital technologies to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes. As artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates health innovation, the Institute will leverage innovative ideas, backed by rigorous research and executed with agility, to achieve scalable and reliable health outcomes for everyone.

The Institute reflects UC San Diego’s enduring commitment to innovation without boundaries. It embodies our strategic vision to transcend traditional silos, foster a culture of deep collaboration, and have a transformative impact on education, research and care. ”

Pradeep Khosla, Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego

This new institute positions UC San Diego as a world leader in the rapidly emerging field of health intelligence. Health intelligence is an approach that turns vast amounts of health data into actionable insights that help people live healthier lives. The combination of speed, cutting-edge research infrastructure and cross-disciplinary expertise enables the Institute to tackle systemic challenges at scale and create innovative new solutions.

“The marriage of computational power and biological insight represents the next frontier in medicine,” said John Carethers, MD, vice chancellor for health sciences at the University of California, San Diego. “By erasing traditional boundaries between engineering, medicine, business, and data science, we are creating a collaborative ecosystem that provides a unified university-wide response to the most complex health challenges.”

The institute will combine experts from the University of California, San Diego and faculty from six institutions. This collaboration bridges the experience of top academic institutions such as the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmacy, and Reddy School of Business with the agility of emerging growth schools such as the Hartuol School of Data Science and Computing and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Sciences.

“UC San Diego is a place with a history of pushing the boundaries of what is possible, especially when it comes to integrating technology into real-world medicine,” said Amy Sitapati, M.D., founding director of the new institute and the Lawrence S. Friedman Professor of Population Health at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. “If research is the brain and clinical care is the body, this institute will serve as the spinal cord, connecting our schools and health care delivery into one responsive, intelligent organism.”

Beyond academic schools, the institute will leverage the power of specialized centers such as the world-renowned San Diego Supercomputer Center and the School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Informatics, which Sitapati leads. To ensure these technologies are carefully implemented, the institute will also work closely with the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, the Center for Healthcare Cybersecurity, and the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at the University of California, San Diego.

“In health care, the most significant gap is usually not a lack of innovation, but rather a systemic challenge to incorporating new discoveries into the ‘last mile,’ or the daily flow of patient care,” said Patti Maysent, CEO of the University of California, San Diego. “By leveraging the intelligence of this institute, we can reduce clinical variation, eliminate preventable harm, and ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care, every time.”

The new institute is built on three strategic pillars.

    • Health Intelligence and Implementation Leadership: Developing leaders who can manage large-scale digital transformation and command center implementations.
    • Training and Education: We offer advanced degree and professional certification programs to develop a new generation of interdisciplinary professionals who can envision and navigate the future of healthcare through health intelligence.
    • Innovation, results, and research: Advancing scalable, AI-enabled solutions in personalized medicine and population analytics to move discovery from the lab to the bedside.

With an ambitious goal of uniting more than 50 faculty members and empowering 750 trainees, the Applied Health Intelligence Institute positions UC San Diego as one of the nation’s leading leaders in AI-powered medicine and fosters unconventional partnerships that scale the digital revolution and improve health outcomes for all.
