With no end in sight to the leadership impasse at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Trump administration confirmed Wednesday that it will not name a new director by a procedural deadline.

In order to keep someone in the acting CDC director position, the administration had until Wednesday to bring forward a nominee for the position, but a series of interim people have been named to the position in all but a month since President Trump’s second term began. Susan Monales was confirmed for the position last July, but was fired in late August after falling out with Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccination policy.

These duties, which the law calls non-delegable, must be performed by Kennedy.
