These are wartime policies even though these countries are not actually at war. But they all get caught within the blast radius of fighter jets fighting thousands of miles away. That’s because the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by the U.S. and Israeli offensive against Iran that began on February 28, has triggered a crisis that has reached kitchens, classrooms, hospitals, and fields across the Global South. The strait, 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, carried 20 percent of the world’s oil, 20 percent of its liquefied natural gas (LNG), a third of its marine fertilizers, and nearly…
Even though far more people work early morning shifts than overnight shifts, many suffer from severe fatigue associated with shift work disorder. This condition can interfere with concentration, work performance, and safety. A new clinical trial led by researchers at Massachusetts General Brigham University found that the wakefulness-promoting drug solriamfetol (Sunosi) can help workers feel more alert during the early morning shift. The survey results are NEJM Records. “Until now, no clinical trials have tested treatments for shift work disorder in early morning shift workers, even though this is the most common type of shift work,” said lead author Charles…
Better parent-child communication leads to stronger soft skills and emotional stability in teens.
An analysis of data from the China Education Commission Survey (2014-2015) found that improved parent-child communication is associated with strengthening adolescents’ non-cognitive abilities. This association was found to be achieved both directly and indirectly. Improved parent-child communication increases the social support available to children and makes them more physically active, which in turn improves non-cognitive skills. The paper was published in pro swan. Non-cognitive abilities are a wide range of psychological characteristics that are not directly related to intellectual ability (such as IQ) but have a significant impact on behavior, motivation, and life outcomes. These abilities include traits such as…

President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Dims Prospects for Government-Supported Clinics
Bluestem Health, a clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska that serves low-income and uninsured patients, has been in the red for the past two years. And CEO Brad Meyer worries that things could soon get worse for the clinic and its 21,000 patients. That’s because Nebraska is set to become the first state to require certain Medicaid enrollees to work or lose coverage under new rules in President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. “This will have a significant financial impact on our company,” Meyer said. On May 1, seven months earlier than the law requires, states will begin imposing work…
Alaska’s waters are sustained by a complex marine food web and support the world’s most important salmon fishery. Scientists are keen to understand how these systems are changing as the climate changes. The challenge is that reliable samples from decades ago are hard to find. “We really need to open our minds and get creative about what can serve as an ecological data source,” said Natalie Mastic, now a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History. Scientists focus on unusual resource: decades-old salmon While working on his PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, Mastic took…
Men who prefer the tradie wife lifestyle often look at women who participate in the tradie lifestyle with derision.
Recent research published in Women’s Psychology Quarterly It suggests that young men who favor the Internet subculture known as the tradie wife movement tend to have hostile, patronizing, and sexist attitudes. The findings provide evidence that the appeal of this lifestyle for men is rooted in a desire for traditional power relationships, rather than simply a preference for a stay-at-home partner. The term tradwife is a combination of the words traditional and wife. This refers to an Internet subculture comprised of women who promote a return to traditional gender roles. These women often use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to…
