After being infected with SARS-CoV-2, up to 10% of people in Germany develop Long COVID. Symptoms include persistent fatigue, difficulty concentrating, breathing problems, and neurological problems and can last for months or even years. This condition does not look the same in all patients, making it especially difficult to understand and treat. “COVID-19 is a very complex disease with a variety of symptoms,” says Professor Yang Li, head of the Department of Computational Biology for Personalized Medicine and director of CiiM. “We still know very little about how and to what extent the long coronavirus progresses. Metaphorically speaking, unfortunately, we…
Jeron Smart started taking weight loss injections a year and a half ago because of severe ankle pain. Mr. Smart, who weighed 285 pounds, worked as a caterer in Savannah, Georgia. After standing on his feet for long periods of time, his ankles would sometimes “swell up like a soccer ball,” he said. She was walking with a limp. An orthopedic surgeon diagnosed her with Achilles tendonitis and recommended she lose weight to alleviate symptoms. Smart started taking the brand name GLP-1 Ozempic. As a result of appetite suppression, I lost weight quickly at first. “At first I lost 30…
Early signs can be overlooked. Fathers are less likely to be diagnosed during pregnancy, but face increased mental health risks months later. Study: Psychiatric disorders in Swedish fathers before, during and after their partner’s pregnancy. Image credit: Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock.com In recent research, JAMA network open investigated the pattern of occurrence of fathers’ mental illness before, during, and after their partner’s pregnancy. The overlooked burden of mental illness among new fathers Parental mental health shapes family functioning and child development across multiple domains, but paternal mental illness has received considerably less research attention than maternal mental illness. This disparity persists…
Recent research published in journals behavioral research and treatment It provides evidence that people experiencing symptoms of depression do not simply view the world more realistically, but rather have a truly pessimistic bias toward future positive events. This study suggests that depressed patients can update their beliefs when desirable things happen, but these hopeful changes tend to be fragile and easily reversed. This study was designed to test whether the negative thought patterns seen in depression reflect true prejudice or simply a lack of normal optimism. Experts have debated the concept of “depressive realism” for decades. This concept actually suggests…
Scientists have discovered an insect that generates its own heat in freezing temperatures
Snow flies may look like ordinary insects, but their survival strategies are atypical. In a new study, Northwestern University scientists investigated how these tiny wingless insects, which move across snowy surfaces to find mates and lay eggs, stay alive in frigid environments. They discovered that snow flies rely on a surprising combination of biological tools. The insect generates its own body heat, like mammals, and can produce antifreeze proteins similar to those found in arctic fish. Although most insects cannot survive below freezing temperatures, snow flies can remain active at temperatures as low as -6 degrees Celsius (21.2 degrees Fahrenheit).…
Whether you feel like you slept well is not just the amount of time you sleep. It also reflects how deeply and continuously you believe you slept. Scientists still don’t fully understand what happens in the brain to create this deep, refreshing feeling of rest. A new study by researchers at the IMT Lucca School of Advanced Studies shows that PLOS Biologyindicating an unexpected factor. Dreams, especially vivid and immersive dreams, can make you feel deeper and more restorative, rather than actually disrupting your sleep. Rethinking deep sleep and brain activity For decades, deep sleep was thought to be a…
‘Detrimental punch’: fears Russia’s war is pushing the Black Sea and its dolphins past a tipping point | Ukraine
IIn the busy port of Odesa, a science ship lies moored. No one can see firsthand the damage to the Boris Alexander from Russian drone and artillery fire that has battered the port city over the past four years of war in Ukraine. It’s too dangerous, just as no one can fully monitor the damage the war is inflicting on the Black Sea.”All we can do is wait,” said Dr. Jaroslav Slobodnik, head of the Slovak Republic-based Environmental Research Institute. “The biodiversity landscape has completely changed. Many species appear to have disappeared, but we need more data. The war has…

Spear Bio, an innovator in ultra-sensitive protein biomarker detection, introduced three new SPEAR UltraDetect™ immunoassays for brain-derived p-Tau 217 (BD-pTau 217), alpha-synuclein (α-syn), and phospho-Ser129-α-synuclein (pS129-α-syn) at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. (AD/PD 2026) Last week. The product’s debut coincides with the company’s newly established direct-to-customer business in North America and Europe, and is an important step in streamlining access to the company’s technology for laboratories studying neurodegenerative protein diseases. The SPEAR UltraDetect BD-pTau 217 assay was first released to early adopters last month and remains the only brain-derived pTau 217 test that provides 100% quantification in…
Scientists from Australia and New Zealand have discovered the remains of an ancient animal in a cave near Waitomo on Aotearoa’s north island. The site contains a large collection of fossils dating back approximately one million years, including a previously unknown ancestor of the kakapo, a large flightless parrot. The discovery includes fossils of 12 species of birds and four species of frogs, providing a rare glimpse into what New Zealand’s ecosystem was like at the time. Climate change and volcanoes caused ancient extinctions The findings show that New Zealand’s wildlife has been largely shaped by dramatic climate change and…
