People use similar mental resources to remember the past and imagine the future. This is a cognitive ability often described as mental time travel. These same ratings showed that past memories were generally experienced more vividly.

They recruited participants before the European Union parliamentary elections in Germany, the general election in the United Kingdom, and the presidential election in the United States.

A few days before each vote, participants completed a survey about their expectations. About a week after the election ended, participants answered the exact same questions.

In all three countries, participants who supported the winning party experienced significant memory changes. Once the winners of the election knew that they had won, they began to think of the election as more important. They also recalled the event more vividly than they had originally expected. Conversely, voters whose preferred candidate lost tended to reduce the importance they placed on the election after the fact.

When political outcomes are better than expected, voters mentally exaggerate the importance of the event. This adjustment further increases the sense of accomplishment of victory and increases the individual’s self-esteem.

The sample generally tended to believe it predicted Harris’ victory more strongly than it actually did. Researchers have proposed a reason for this particular mental distortion after electoral defeat.

These psychological adjustments lead people to fall into a false illusion of consistency. In doing so, they maintain a consistent self-image but also reinforce partisan beliefs. When voters rewrite their memories to align with their party affiliation, they inadvertently reinforce deeply polarized worldviews. These biased memories are recalled unconsciously in daily life and continue to form a person’s cognitive landscape.

The researchers acknowledge that there are some caveats in their experimental design. The sampling method and political composition of the participant groups differed in the three countries due to logistical constraints. While the European and British elections were also largely predictable, the US campaign was highly polarized and uncertain. That particular unpredictability may have influenced the magnitude of the psychological changes observed in the United States.
