This question is at the heart of a new paper published in 2016. natural astronomyIn , researchers investigate the often-overlooked problem of “false negatives” in the search for extraterrestrial life. These are cases where life exists, or once existed, but scientists were unable to detect it.

“We’re currently investing a lot of money into missions that may require a different design.”

The overlooked challenge of discovering extraterrestrial life

One of the main goals of astrobiology is to determine whether life exists elsewhere in the universe. Researchers look for clues to life, but those clues are rarely easy to interpret.

Scientists have long worried about so-called false positives. A false positive occurs when observations appear to indicate life, but it is later determined that there is another explanation. False negatives cause the opposite problem. In such cases, signs of life are present but remain unnoticed.

“We should be aware of these false negative results,” says lead author Inge Rose ten Cate, a professor of astrobiology at Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam. “That means there are deficiencies in recognizing the existence of life. These deficiencies have not yet risen to the top of the research agenda.”

Why Signs of Life Are Missed

There are several reasons why signs of life may not be detected. Traces left behind by organisms may not remain over time, and observable signals may be too weak to be identified or detected by existing technologies.

Ten Kate argues that these risks deserve more attention.

“We therefore advocate the development of targeted research strategies that systematically address these risks, combining laboratory experiments with modeling studies and fieldwork. Space missions and space instruments are designed to detect potential signs of life without taking into account the risk of missing something. The search for signs of life must be carried out in parallel with more clearly defined questions and testable hypotheses to justify the goals of a particular measurement or observation.”

Researchers also point to artificial intelligence as a potentially valuable tool. AI systems trained to identify patterns can reveal relationships and signals that human observers would never notice.

“Then we might discover things we could never see on our own, and new observations could reveal how and where they fit into such patterns.”

    Cost of false negatives

Lack of evidence of life can have serious consequences.

First, scientists may divert attention from promising targets or reduce support for instruments that can detect life forms beyond their current capabilities. As a result, potentially habitable environments may be overlooked.

“This is a simplistic example, but even if there is life beneath a rock, you would not notice it if you were just looking at the rock from above. Therefore, we need to thoroughly investigate whether the conditions for life to exist in that environment exist and whether we can recognize the patterns on the surface of the celestial body.”

A second concern concerns future exploration and resource extraction. If life exists on other worlds but goes undetected, policymakers may approve mining and other unintentionally destructive activities.

“Second, there is a risk that policymakers will approve the premature exploitation of raw materials on the planet, irreversibly destroying life that goes unnoticed.”

    Hidden causes of false negatives

False negatives can occur in several ways.

For example, life may be widespread and active on Earth, but its traces may not be recognized. Atmospheric processes can also complicate the search. On some worlds, gases produced by living organisms may be removed or masked by other processes, making them much more difficult to detect.

Researchers note that this type of false negative is particularly difficult because it is often only recognized after the fact.

look beyond what you already know

One of the biggest challenges is looking for things that might not resemble known life forms.

“But how do you find something you can’t find?” Ten Kate asks. “This question is at the heart of our problem, because we tend to look for things we already know. So we need to understand very clearly what kind of life is possible in a particular place, what the conditions for that life are, and how we can recognize traces of that life. And even then, we can miss things.”

Ten Cate points to iron-bearing minerals discovered on Mars last year. These minerals exhibit a different type of oxidation than nearby materials.

“On Earth, we just see these different oxidations as a result of the presence of life. But does that necessarily mean we’re dealing with life in an extraterrestrial context?”

The researchers stress that these Martian minerals do not represent any known false negatives. Instead, it highlights how much remains unknown.

“To be clear, these minerals don’t mean we’re dealing with a false negative result in this case. We just don’t understand what’s going on here yet. But if we don’t investigate this further, we don’t think we’re actually dealing with a false negative result. Therefore, we need to understand more about how the geochemistry works and how the underlying chemical reactions work in such situations. It can also help rule out false negative results.”

The researchers conclude that careful preparation is essential before sending missions to other worlds.

And last but not least, before you send an expedition somewhere, know what you’re getting into. “So be sure to carefully research the landing zone conditions in advance.”
