UChicago Medicine and Artisight have entered into a partnership to bring the health tech company’s smart hospital platform to multiple medical sites within the academic health system.

Artisight provides hospital infrastructure and optimization solutions powered by artificial intelligence. The organizations say more than 1,800 devices will be deployed in patient rooms, post-anesthesia care units, operating rooms and throughout Chicago’s new 575,000-square-foot cancer treatment facility scheduled to open in April 2027.

Yeman Collier, chief information officer at the University of Chicago Medicine, told Fierce Healthcare in an emailed statement that the new cancer center “offers an exciting opportunity to reimagine the delivery of technology” used in treatment.

“Leveraging technology to improve the patient and family experience, reduce cognitive and administrative burden on care teams, and improve safety and clinical outcomes are just some of the objectives behind the partnership,” Collier said.

Artisight CEO and co-founder Andrew Gostin, MD, told Fierce Healthcare in an emailed statement that the partnership was driven by “a shared understanding that the future of hospital care cannot depend on overburdened clinicians and disconnected technology.”

“Academic health systems operate at a unique level of complexity, balancing critical patient care, research, surgical coordination, and cancer treatment,” Gosteen said. “Our organization aligns around a core belief: the hospital room and operating room must function as integrated systems that can sense activity, automate routine tasks, and continuously provide AI-enabled capabilities without having to rip and replace the system’s technology every few years.”

Through this partnership, Gosteen said, clinical practice using the deployed platform will become “more proactive, coordinated, and safety-oriented.”

“By leveraging ambient sensing, computer vision, and location-based services, this platform supports fall prevention, enables early identification of clinical risks, facilitates virtual collaboration, and streamlines operations from admission to discharge,” Gostin said.

Collier said the implementation will allow for “a more personalized care experience while increasing patient safety.”

Artisight’s platform was designed as a central hub for smart hospitals. It integrates computer vision, multi-sensor networks, indoor positioning and real-time location systems, voice-activated services, and video conferencing along with the hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) and other third-party systems.

Gostin said the company has received an “incredibly strong” response, with about 500 hospitals signed up across the country. “In one site, this technology helped prevent cutting in the wrong area,” he said. “Also, nurse turnover decreased by 75% within six months. This is a major shift in an industry where recruiting and training experienced nurses is one of the biggest challenges facing health systems.”
