Reduced physical activity is negatively impacting the health of American children and contributing to rising obesity rates across the country. Obesity among young people increased by about 30% between 1999 and 2023, and severe obesity increased by 50%, according to a new study published in the American Heart Association’s flagship journal Circulation. To help more students get active, the American Heart Association and the National Football League (NFL) recently awarded NFL PLAY 60 grants to 164 schools in 44 states through the association’s school-based programs, Kids Heart Challenge™ and American Heart Challenge™.

This is the third NFL PLAY 60 grant awarded in 2026 and is part of the NFL’s $350,000 annual investment in collaboration with the American Heart Association, a relentless force that is transforming the future of health for everyone around the world. NFL PLAY 60 grants help schools meet critical health needs identified by educators, from enhanced facilities and recess to comprehensive physical education and wellness resources.

Because children spend so much time in the classroom, schools are powerful allies in helping children develop lifelong healthy habits. With the support of the NFL, we are proud to provide schools with additional opportunities to promote physical activity and student health, giving more students the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives. ”

Nancy Brown, CEO, American Heart Association

Currently, less than one in four children in the United States is getting enough physical activity. NFL PLAY 60 encourages children to be physically active for at least 60 minutes per day, in line with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

“For many kids, staying active is not an interest. Access to the right space, equipment and time to travel is important,” said Megan Mendoza, NFL senior manager of social responsibility. “These grants will help remove barriers so more students have the opportunity to jump in and play, including those who might otherwise be on the sidelines.”
