    Goodbye cavities? New gel could regenerate tooth enamel

    A newly developed dental gel has the potential to rebuild damaged tooth enamel, potentially creating a new approach to preventing cavities and repairing worn teeth.

    Scientists from the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy and School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering have created a material that mimics the biological processes that naturally form enamel. Their findings were; nature communicationssuggests that the gel may help repair enamel weakened by mineral loss and erosion, strengthen enamel that is still healthy, and protect teeth from future damage.

    Gel that recreates natural enamel growth

    Dentists can quickly apply the gel using a process similar to today’s fluoride treatments. However, unlike traditional fluoride products, the new gel does not contain fluoride. Instead, it is made from proteins designed to mimic the key functions of natural proteins involved in enamel development during infancy.

    When you apply the gel to your teeth, it forms a thin, durable coating that penetrates the tooth surface and fills in small cracks, pores, and other damaged areas. This coating acts as a framework to rebuild the mineral structure of the enamel.

    This material pulls calcium and phosphate ions from saliva and uses them to guide the controlled formation of new mineral crystals. This process is known as epitaxial mineralization. Simply put, the new crystals grow into the tooth’s existing structure, allowing them to bond with the natural tissue beneath the tooth rather than forming a separate, unorganized coating.

    According to the researchers, this systematic growth helps the repaired surface restore both the microstructure and the physical properties of healthy enamel.

    Possible treatments for sensitive teeth

    This material may also be useful for people with exposed dentin. Dentin is the soft layer beneath the enamel that can become exposed when the enamel wears away or the gums recede. Dentin contains microscopic grooves that connect to the tooth’s nerves, so exposure can cause acute sensitivity to heat, cold, sweetness, and touch.

    When applied to exposed dentin, the gel can grow an enamel-like mineral layer over the surface. This helps reduce tooth sensitivity while creating a stronger surface for dental restorations to bond to.

    Why enamel loss is so difficult to treat

    Enamel damage is one of the main contributors to tooth decay and other dental diseases that affect almost 50% of the world’s population. Severe dental disease can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss. Poor oral health is also associated with broader health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

    Enamel is the hard outer covering that protects your teeth from pressure, temperature changes, acids, and everyday wear and tear. Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, but it does not contain living cells and cannot repair itself once it is lost.

    Existing products such as fluoride varnishes and remineralization treatments can help strengthen remaining enamel or reduce symptoms, but they cannot effectively replace the original enamel structure. The Nottingham researchers say their material could offer a more restorative option by promoting the growth of organized minerals that closely resemble natural tissue.

    Regenerated enamel that withstands everyday stress

    Dr. Abshar Hasan, postdoctoral fellow and lead author of the study, said: “Dental enamel has a unique structure that gives it the remarkable property of protecting our teeth from physical, chemical and thermal attacks throughout life. When our material is applied to demineralized or eroded enamel, or exposed dentin, this material reacts in an integrated and organized manner with the formation of crystals. When we examined the mechanical properties of these regenerated tissues under conditions that simulated “real-life situations” such as tooth brushing, chewing, and exposure to acidic foods, we found that the regenerated enamel behaved exactly like healthy enamel. ”

    The researchers tested the recycled material under conditions aimed at replicating the stresses that teeth are subjected to in everyday life. These include repeated brushing, chewing force, and contact with acidic foods that can gradually dissolve enamel.

    The results suggested that the repaired tissue exhibited mechanical behavior similar to healthy natural enamel and may be durable enough for practical dental applications.

    Researchers move toward commercial products

    Professor Álvaro Mata, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials, who led the study, said: “We’re very excited about this technology because it was designed with clinicians and patients in mind. It’s safe, easy and quick to apply, and it’s scalable. “‘s technology is versatile and opens up opportunities for application in multiple types of products to help patients of all ages suffering from a variety of dental problems related to enamel loss and exposed dentin.” Startup Mintech-Bio hopes to launch its first product by next year. This innovation could soon help patients around the world. ”

    Because the gel can be applied quickly and manufactured at scale, the researchers believe it could eventually be incorporated into several types of dental products. Potential applications include professional treatments for enamel erosion, products for sensitive teeth, and materials designed to improve the durability of fillings and other restorations.

    The team has begun commercialization efforts through its startup company, Mintech-Bio, with the goal of developing an initial product for clinical use.
