A team from the University of Barcelona has designed an innovative compound with a pioneering mechanism of action for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and tested it in animal models. Unlike current drugs, which primarily remove beta-amyloid plaques that accumulate in the brain, this new experimental drug reprograms the neuroepigenome by correcting changes in gene expression that contribute to disease progression. The results of this study are molecular therapyopening the door to epigenetics-based therapeutic strategies to combat Alzheimer’s disease. The compound FLAV-27 represents an innovative and promising approach to Alzheimer’s disease, with the potential to modify the disease process as…

The first major update to strength training recommendations in 17 years sends a straightforward message. Even small amounts of strength training can improve strength, increase muscle size, increase power, and support overall body function. The latest guidance, published by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a position stand, is built on 137 systematic reviews involving more than 30,000 participants. This makes it the most extensive, evidence-based resistance training recommendation to date. “The best strength-training programs are the ones you can actually stick to,” says Stuart Phillips, distinguished professor in the Department of Kinesiology and author of “Position Stand.”…
Almost one in two Americans has high blood pressure (also known as the “silent killer” because of its negative effects on the heart and blood vessels), but many people don’t know they have high blood pressure. In a study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Sessions (ACC.26), researchers report that high blood pressure-related heart disease is an increasing proportion of deaths among women ages 25 to 44, increasing from 1.1 to 4.8 deaths per 100,000 women in this age group between 1999 and 2023. High blood pressure damages the heart and is an indicator of heart disease…
