The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has set up an advisory group aimed at boosting “confidence in vaccines” amid growing hesitancy in the region. This advisory group meets quarterly and is comprised of academics, health care professionals, medical societies, patient organization representatives, and public health organizations. This is also part of the EMA’s vaccine rollout strategy, a broader approach to raise awareness of vaccines across Europe. According to data shared by the World Health Organization (WHO) last summer, childhood vaccination against measles, pertussis and other diseases in the WHO European Region “remains below pre-pandemic levels in 2024, leaving even more children…

An international research team including scientists from the University of Paderborn has reached an important milestone on the road to a quantum internet. For the first time, they were able to teleport the polarization state of a single photon from one quantum dot to another physically separated quantum dot. Simply put, this means that the properties of one photon have been transferred to another photon through quantum teleportation. This result is an important step for future quantum communication networks. In the experiment, the researchers connected the system using a 270-meter free-space optical link. The research results were published in a…
Aidoc, a startup that developed a clinical AI solution that leverages foundational models, has secured a $150 million funding round, less than a year after raising the same nine-figure amount in new funding. The Series E round was led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives Growth Equity with participation from General Catalyst, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, and NVentures, the venture capital arm of NVIDIA. This round brings the company’s total funding to more than $500 million, less than a year after a growth round led by General Catalyst and Square Peg. Aidoc executives noted that this highlights the company’s pace of momentum…
A 1-year longitudinal study showed that adoption of the religious coping strategy “surrender to God” was associated with nearly three times lower odds of substance use relapse in Christian patients over a 1-year period, when use of this strategy was measured using an implicit association task. However, when adoption of this coping strategy was explicitly measured, the likelihood of relapse was only slightly reduced after 1 month, but not at 6 and 12 month assessments. The paper is addictive behavior report. Surrender to God is a religious coping strategy in substance use disorder recovery in which people give up their…

New real-world data reveals that HPV risk does not end in early adulthood and provides important insights into lifelong infection patterns and what this means for older women’s vaccination decisions. Study: Incidence of human papillomavirus infection in women aged 27 years and older in the United States: A federated data network study. Image credit: Orawan Pattarawimonchai/Shutterstock.com recent international infectious disease journal The study looked at how often unvaccinated U.S. women aged 27 and older develop newly detected anogenital HPV infections. This information may assist in vaccination decisions for adults in this age group. HPV prevalence and prevention in adults HPV…
A large-scale study published in BMJ Aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, has been suggested to be the most effective form of exercise for people with knee osteoarthritis. These activities were found to have the greatest improvement in pain, physical function, walking ability, and overall quality of life. Researchers note that while other types of exercise can be effective, they should be used in conjunction with aerobic exercise, rather than replacing it as the main approach. Causes of knee osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually breaks down. This causes pain, swelling,…
State insurance regulators are working on the most comprehensive analysis of the nation’s blighted real estate insurance market to understand how climate change is affecting the price and availability of coverage. Insurers are ordered to submit internal records showing claims and losses caused by wildfires, storms and other perils in each ZIP code in which they sell insurance. Data collection is overseen by a national organization of state insurance commissioners, which has been reluctant to collect such precise information in the past, but now wants to understand the severity of the growing property and casualty insurance crisis. “We literally do…
