Trump administration officials took the unprecedented step Tuesday, declaring that all oil and gas activity in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico is exempt from Endangered Species Act protections. To do so, they convened a federal commission, dubbed “God’s Squad” because of its potential to drive the species to extinction, which had not met in more than 30 years. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the move was necessary to ensure continued energy supplies and avoid lawsuits from environmental groups. Hegseth said Tuesday that the Interior Department has notified the Pentagon that ongoing litigation “could disrupt oil and gas production…
How does DNA pack the vast amount of information needed to build the human body? And what happens when that system breaks down? Research led by Jesse Dixon, MD, has investigated how DNA is arranged three-dimensionally inside cells and found that problems with this structure can lead to cancer and developmental disorders, including autism-related disorders. New findings from his lab show that the 3D organization of the genome is not fixed. Instead, it is constantly changing. By studying different human cell types, researchers discovered that DNA unfolds and refolds at different rates across the genome, directly influencing how genes are…
Childhood trauma is associated with increased risk of developing co-occurring physical and mental illnesses in old age
People who experience difficult and traumatic experiences in childhood face an increased risk of developing co-occurring physical and mental health conditions later in life. A recent observational study followed thousands of middle-aged and older adults over several years and found that childhood adversity strongly predicted later comorbidity of chronic physical illness and clinical depression. The study, which provides new insights into how childhood trauma shapes long-term human health, was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. Adverse childhood experiences include a variety of serious difficulties that occur before a person reaches adulthood. These traumatic events include direct harm such as…
Imagine tiny robots made from DNA traveling through the bloodstream, delivering drugs exactly where they are needed, targeting cancer cells, viruses, and other threats. These microscopic machines can also assemble ultra-high precision data storage systems and computing devices at the nanometer scale. Although the potential is remarkable, most DNA robots today are still in their early experimental stages and are understood as proofs of concept rather than practical tools. Researchers are using creative design approaches to study how DNA can be manipulated and put into working machines. These include building rigid DNA joints, incorporating flexible components, and using folding techniques…
Salt substitutes are a simple and effective way to reduce salt intake and improve heart health, yet surprisingly few people with high blood pressure use them. This is an important finding from a new preliminary study presented at the American Heart Association’s Hypertension Science Session 2025, a major conference focused on the latest advances in hypertension research and their connections to heart, kidney, and metabolic diseases. High blood pressure develops when the force of blood moving through the arteries remains elevated. Over time, this can damage blood vessels and greatly increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious…
The number of known proteins is infinitely small compared to the world of theoretically possible proteins. However, these known proteins are the only major training ground for future protein design. Therefore, understanding how representative these proteins are within their overall potential diversity can help inform strategies for a wide range of applications, including the development of therapeutics, biocatalysts, or biomaterials. Published in PNASan international team from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST), the Austrian Institute of Science and Technology (ISTA), the University of Vienna, and the Center for Astrobiological Sciences (CAB) investigated the relationship between protein…
Biogen raises $5.6 billion for Apellis and its two approved drugs, aiming for rapid commercial tailwinds
Despite a healthy roster of late-stage assets and a revenue recovery in 2025, it’s no secret that Biogen is looking for near-term revenue drivers ahead of a planned product rollout in the second half of the decade. Currently, the company is responding by strengthening its immunology field and paving the way for future ambitions in nephrology, adding two new medicines to its active drug portfolio through M&A. Biogen on Tuesday announced an agreement to acquire Apellis Pharmaceuticals for $41 per share in cash, for a total transaction value of approximately $5.6 billion. For Biogen, the deal provides access to Apellis’…
WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday against a law banning “conversion therapy” for LGBTQ+ children in Colorado, one of about 24 states that prohibits the unfair practice. An 8-1 high court majority sided with Christian counselors who argued that laws banning talk therapy violate the First Amendment. The justices agreed that the law raised free speech concerns and sent it back to lower courts to determine whether it met legal standards that most laws do not pass. Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the court, said the law “censors speech based on viewpoint.” The First Amendment “provides a shield against…
Short-acting psychedelic DMT shows promise as a rapid treatment for major depressive disorder
Recent research published in natural medicine A brief psychedelic experience combined with talk therapy suggests that it can quickly and safely reduce symptoms of severe depression. The results of this study show that a single intravenous dose of a fast-acting psychedelic compound can provide sustained relief for up to three months. This study provides early evidence for a mental health treatment that can significantly reduce clinic time compared to other psychedelic treatments. Dimethyltryptamine, commonly known as DMT, is a natural compound that produces strong but short-lasting psychedelic effects. It works by interacting with the serotonin system in the brain, which…
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, may offer new hope for people living with Leigh syndrome, a rare and severe childhood disease. Researchers from Berlin’s Charité University are conducting the study in collaboration with collaborators from Düsseldorf’s Heinrich-Heine University (HHU), Düsseldorf University Hospital (UKD), and Hamburg’s Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP, the journal reported. cell The drug improved symptoms in a small group of patients. Leigh syndrome is a rare metabolic disease that affects the brain and muscles and usually begins in infancy or early childhood. In a pilot study of six patients, sildenafil treatment was associated…
