New Jersey became the sixth state in the past decade and second state this year to completely eliminate moratoriums on new nuclear power plant construction. On a crisp Wednesday morning at the Hope Creek Power Plant in the state’s southwest corner, Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation that lifts a de facto ban on building new nuclear reactors until the U.S. has a permanent solution to radioactive spent fuel. Democrats, who campaigned last year to build new nuclear power plants in the state, said the ban has served no purpose. “”For too long, outdated laws have prevented us from even considering…
Adolescent boys and girls begin to develop different cognitive abilities as they progress through high school, with boys increasingly favoring mechanical reasoning and girls leaning toward math and language skills. These different cognitive profiles appear to change as teens age due to fundamental changes in mental processing speed. The results of this research have recently intelligence and cognitive abilities. The concept of cognitive tilt describes specific patterns of mental strengths and weaknesses. This, when combined with relative weaknesses, means that an individual’s cognitive profile is heavily biased towards one area of strength. An academically inclined person may excel at reading…
It is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attack and stroke, which is the leading cause of death in the United States and around the world. Hypertension is treatable, but despite the availability of effective and affordable medications, more than half of Americans still have uncontrolled hypertension, and that rate is rising in tandem with harmful social determinants of health. A new study tested a potentially effective alternative to established drug treatments for low-income patients with high blood pressure. Strategy: A team-based, protocol-driven approach. This includes home monitoring and feedback, medication adjustment, and…
WASHINGTON—Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin addressed a conference of climate change-skeptical scientists and other experts Wednesday, praising the decision to repeal so-called “endangerment findings” that form the basis of federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. “Today is a day to celebrate innocence!” he said. The study’s reversal in February will allow the federal government to end regulations on climate-changing emissions from sources such as cars, trucks and power plants. “We’re going back to basics, and we’re not going to accept everything the left says without question or pushback,” Zeldin told a cheering audience at the 16th International Conference on…
Despite the growing number of artificial intelligence sources of health information, 85% of U.S. adults still get their information from their providers “at least sometimes,” a new study finds. Pew Research Center researchers surveyed 5,111 U.S. adults from Oct. 20 to Oct. 26 for the report. A study that interviewed people who completed pilgrimages in Taiwan, Japan, and Spain found that the journey allowed participants to take a step back and rebuild their inner balance. This process is driven by physical and sensory experiences that lead to psychological reflection. This study identified six key interrelated factors that shape pilgrims’ spiritual growth. The paper was published in Psychology of religion and spirituality. A pilgrimage is a journey to a place that has special religious or spiritual significance. People go on pilgrimages seeking spiritual growth, forgiveness, or a deeper connection to their faith. A pilgrim is someone who…
A new study from the University of Toronto shows that where a mother lives in an Indian city – in a slum or non-slum area – has a bearing on how she breastfeeds her baby. Breastfeeding within the first hour of birth helps newborns fight infections and reduces the risk of death, especially in low- and middle-income countries. For about the first six months, giving your baby only breast milk (no water or other food) protects him from diarrhea, pneumonia, stunted growth, and supports brain development. Researchers used data from India’s 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey to compare the breastfeeding…
For centuries, mental illness and physical illness have been considered two distinct categories, each with its own field of study, its own doctors, and its own menu of treatments. A new study from the University of Colorado Boulder challenges this long-standing dichotomy, showing that the same chunks of DNA that underlie mental illnesses such as depression, PTSD, and ADHD are also linked to risk for many physical illnesses. Research involving approximately 2 million people published in journal nature communicationsreveals how often and why mental and physical illness occur. This could ultimately pave the way for new treatments that address both,…

Pfizer is making further changes to its California layout, pulling out of the South San Francisco office site that was home to Global Blood Therapeutics, which it acquired in 2022. The 164,150-square-foot office building on Oyster Point Boulevard will close because the office space is “currently underutilized,” a Pfizer spokesperson told Fierce Pharma in an emailed statement. The move was made after a “careful evaluation” and will see all front-line employees transition to remote roles. “Pfizer continues to maintain a strong presence in California, including our facility in San Diego,” the spokesperson said. “Additionally, we are considering several options, including…
