The library was launched with an “initial cohort of early adopters” to meet the demand for independent reviews, according to the announcement. Six tools are currently in the library and “many more products are in the evaluation pipeline,” APA Labs Managing Director Tanya Carlson told Fierce Healthcare in an emailed statement.
“The library will continue to grow as these companies go through an evidence-based, expert-driven evaluation process,” Carlson said.
Carlson added that the evaluation is “more than just reviewing documents.”
“These are hands-on processes led by independent digital health evaluators in consultation with licensed psychologists, data privacy experts, and medical technology engineers, and culminated with review by APA’s psychological science experts, who have deep knowledge of the digital mental and behavioral health field,” Carlson said.
Apps currently in the Digital Badge Solutions Library include Calm Health, Calm: Sleep and Meditation, Kai.ai, StarStarter for Anxiety, PepperChat, and BrightCanary Parental Controls.
Dr. Chris Mosunic, Calm’s chief clinical officer, said in the announcement that “navigating the vast landscape” of available digital health tools “can be overwhelming.”
“Digital badge programs bring incredible value to the sector by providing a trusted framework for safety, ethics, and evidence-based practices,” Mosnich said. “As an original supporter, we’re proud to showcase badges that help people make informed and confident choices about their digital mental health.”
The APA Labs Digital Badge Program will launch in August 2025 and evaluate mental health products based on alignment with clinical standards, regulatory compliance, and privacy protections.
