Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is a multidrug-resistant bacterium that can cause severe and life-threatening hemorrhagic pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems. Nevertheless, treatment options for this bacterium are limited, and infections caused by this bacterium are extremely difficult to treat. The commonly used antibiotic levofloxacin (LVFX) is currently one of the most effective antibiotics, but evidence has shown that: S. maltophilia Resistance has increased. Alternatively, the new antibacterial agent cefiderocol (CFDC) S. maltophilia In experimental research. However, its effectiveness against hemorrhagic pneumonia is still unclear.
Therefore, a research group led by Dr. Imotowaki of the Osaka Metropolitan University Graduate School of Medicine examined the effectiveness of CFDC and LVFX using a mouse model. After dividing the mice into control, CFDC, and LVFX groups, the researchers administered the drug to mice suffering from severe hemorrhagic pneumonia, which caused the following symptoms: S. maltophilia The effectiveness of each treatment was then evaluated.
As a result, both antimicrobial treatments improved survival and reduced bacterial burden in the heart and lungs. In addition, microscopic examination of lung tissue revealed reduced bleeding, indicating reduced lung injury. However, instances of bleeding differed between the LVFX and CFDC groups. Almost no bleeding was observed in mice treated with LVFX, whereas slight bleeding occurred in the CFDC group.
The effects observed in this study were more pronounced with LVFX. One possible reason is that the bacteria more easily reach the lungs, which are the main organs they infect. On the other hand, the emergence of LVFX-resistant strains has also been reported, so it is important to select an appropriate therapeutic agent according to the clinical situation, taking antimicrobial resistance into consideration and using CFDC as an alternative treatment. S. maltophilia. ”
