Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, a Danaher company and a global leader in clinical diagnostics, today announced the U.S. launch of the DxU 1800 System, a fully automated urine testing solution that combines new chemistry analyzers and consumables with proven microscopy technology. Announced at the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) Annual Scientific Meeting and Clinical Laboratory Expo, the system is designed to help laboratories deliver standardized results at scale, allowing clinicians to confidently move from testing to decision-making.

Urinalysis is one of the most widely used diagnostic tests throughout medical practice. In emergency departments in the United States, approximately one in three patient visits involves a urine test, and nearly half of all hospital admissions involve a urine test. In non-acute care, up to 87% of primary care patients undergo a urine test, and urine tests consistently rank in the top 10 most ordered tests, highlighting the critical role they play in timely triage, diagnosis, and patient management.
Despite the important role and increasing volume of urine testing, many laboratories still rely on manual reviews, fragmented processes, or workflows that require separate chemistry and microscopy systems. As testing moves to larger core and reference laboratories, these inefficiencies can cause bottlenecks, variability, and staffing strains. Urinalysis plays an important role in detecting and monitoring disease progression and treatment response across infections, kidney disease, metabolic disorders such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, and urinary tract infections (UTI). In the United States, diabetes prevalence has more than doubled over the past 50 years and now affects 12% of the population, while CKD prevalence has steadily increased to nearly 14-15% of adults. At the same time, UTIs continue to cause nearly 10 million clinical cases annually, with recent trends showing more severe outcomes. These factors have combined to increase demand for testing and expand the use of urine testing across healthcare settings.
Promote workflow efficiency
As part of Beckman Coulter Diagnostics’ connected ecosystem, the DxU 1800 system combines the new DxU 1800c chemical analyzer and DxU Iris Microscopy analyzer to provide a fully automated, integrated urine testing platform. Combining these technologies integrates chemical analysis and particle imaging within a single high-throughput system, allowing laboratories to scale their operations with more consistency and control.
This integrated solution streamlines end-to-end urine testing by reducing manual handoffs and enabling a more standardized workflow across chemistry and microscopy. By automating and connecting these processes, the DxU 1800 system leverages the DxU Iris automated urine testing solution to streamline workflows by reducing manual microscopy rates to less than 3%, helping labs increase throughput, reduce variability, and redeploy staff to higher-value tasks.
The standalone DxU 1800c chemical analyzer can process up to 300 samples per hour, supports expansive results storage of up to 2,000,000 samples and 100,000 strip images, and displays strip image results on-screen for easy review.
Additionally, the expanded chemistry menu will include creatinine and microalbumin assays, which could potentially provide additional renal function insights as part of routine screening tests without changing existing laboratory workflows.
