US President Donald Trump has issued a harsh ultimatum to Canada, threatening to impose strong new tariffs on imports to offset the cost of widespread air pollution from the country’s ongoing wildfires.

The president recently spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the FIFA World Cup finals in New Jersey and insisted that the influx of “unclean, polluted and unhealthy” smoke was a form of “deliberate negligence” on the part of Ottawa. The trade dispute marks a significant escalation of cross-border tensions, as the environmental crisis begins to directly impact economic relations between the two countries.

With air pollution warnings now affecting millions of Americans in the Midwest and Northeast, the White House has positioned the environmental impact as a financial burden that Canada must bear.

U.S. health officials have advised millions of people to limit outdoor activities, and poor visibility is reportedly disrupting travel, sporting events and daily life in several states. guardian.

Writing on social media platforms society of truthPresident Trump said Canada must take responsibility for the smoke’s impact on American society. He argued that pollution is forcing businesses to close in some areas, and said the costs should be recovered through higher duties on Canadian imports.

“Canada is responsible for the fact that it does not properly maintain its forests and forests, and the United States is being needlessly invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous and completely unacceptable,” President Trump’s Truth Social post reads.

President Trump later said he had raised the issue directly with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after the latter attended the FIFA World Cup finals in New Jersey. “I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but we have to stop the fires,” the president told reporters. He said Canada must do more to suppress the fires and reiterated that tariffs and compensation could be imposed if the smoke continues to spread into the United States.

“Maybe they should pay us damages or something, or we should impose some tariffs,” he continued, according to Reuters.

    Canada rebels

Canadian leaders rejected Mr. Trump’s criticism and said the country had already committed significant resources to combating one of the most difficult wildfire seasons in recent years. On Saturday, July 18, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called President Trump’s comments “absolutely unacceptable” and said Canada is committed to fighting wildfires. “We’re going to get through this,” Ford said. “We’re going to be there to support our neighbors.”

“Canada is mobilizing more than 5,000 firefighters and nearly 300 water bombers, helicopters and evacuation aircraft to contain, control and mitigate the fires,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying more than 5,300 firefighters were battling the blazes with the support of aircraft, thermal imaging technology and international crews.

    Health concerns from wildfire smoke

The smoke has spread across vast swathes of North America, with more than 100 million Americans affected by air pollution at various points during the outbreak. Cities including Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., have issued health advisories as fine particles have reduced air quality to unhealthy levels.

Storm and weather analyst Colin McCarthy said the wildfire crisis in North America is intensifying. “The wildfire situation across North America continues to worsen, with tens of thousands of lightning strikes across the Pacific Northwest and dozens of new wildfires starting across Oregon and Washington states,” McCarthy said Thursday.

President Trump’s latest threats exacerbated months of friction between Washington and Ottawa over tariffs. The administration has repeatedly used tariffs as leverage in its dispute with Canada, and the two countries have exchanged criticism over trade policies, including tariffs on metals and other goods.

As the political debate over trade and tariffs rages on, the reality in the atmosphere remains harsh for millions of Americans. With air quality indices frequently reaching dangerous levels, the intersection of domestic public health and international trade policy is likely to dominate the diplomatic agenda for the rest of the summer.
