Announcement of the new publication of materia medica method journal. V. thibetica, a traditional medicinal and edible plant used by the Bai people of China, is known for its ability to strengthen Qi, nourish the blood, expel moisture, and relieve itching. Previous studies have shown that its root extract (JM02001) exerts anti-aging effects by promoting collagen expression and antioxidant power.

However, its anti-skin aging effects in vivo and its physiologically active components are largely unknown. This article describes how JM02001 was found to attenuate extracellular matrix (ECM) loss, restore superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD-1) expression, suppress matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) expression, and increase epidermal barrier strength in D-galactose-treated mice. The ethyl acetate fraction (JM02102) showed the most promising anti-glycation, antioxidant, and collagen-promoting activities. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) was identified as an important active compound.

Both JM02102 and CGA reduced ECM degradation and enhanced epidermal barrier function in D-galactose-treated mice. Furthermore, in mice treated with glucocorticoids, dermal and epidermal thickness were restored, REDD1 and p16INK4A expression was suppressed, and epidermal barrier function was enhanced. Therefore, these findings indicate that V. thibetica root extract and its compound CGA protect against skin aging by preserving the ECM, reducing oxidative stress, and strengthening the skin barrier, thus validating its traditional usage and highlighting its potential as a source of anti-aging therapeutics.
