WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is moving quickly to identify the next head of the Food and Drug Administration following the resignation of Marty McCulley on Tuesday, seeking someone who can rebuild trust with the agency’s staff, focus on the agency’s food policy and continue to advance drug approval reform.
Administration leaders hope to carry out the search over the “coming weeks,” said an official familiar with the process, speaking frankly on condition of anonymity. Despite some chatter among lobbyists about who will be in the race, there is currently no shortlist of candidates, officials said.
Despite the urgency, this process takes time. The Senate is in session for just a few days, and the administration also needs to confirm Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nominee Erika Schwartz and surgeon general nominee Nicole Safier. Kyle Diamantas, the former head of the FDA’s food center, may continue to serve as acting commissioner during the November midterm elections.
