WASHINGTON — The White House is asking Congress to cut spending at the Department of Health and Human Services by more than 12%, according to the 2027 federal budget proposal released Friday.

The budget is largely similar to what the Trump administration proposed last year. This includes deep cuts to the National Institutes of Health, the elimination of the Health Research Agency, and the creation of a new agency dedicated to chronic diseases called the Healthy America Administration.

The president’s budget proposal is an agenda-setting document, indicating what the administration wants to focus on next year. However, the ultimate responsibility for passing laws governing federal spending rests with Congress.
