President Trump’s Medicare chief said Thursday that his team is considering a policy that would automatically enroll Medicare beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage plans. This is a controversial idea that was advocated in the conservative policy blueprint “Project 2025.”
Chris Klomp said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is considering the feasibility of a model that automatically enrolls beneficiaries in private forms of Medicare or accountable care organizations such as those participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. Individuals can still choose another insurance policy. Currently, those who do not choose are covered by traditional Medicare.
“In my opinion, if there is no long-term secular relationship between the beneficiary, patient, and provider, which is better than defaulting to a fee-for-service contract? Yes,” Klomp said.
