Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the senators who hold perhaps the most power to advance or thwart his “Make America Healthy Again” plan. During the hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, the secretary will also face Chairman Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), who made a number of promises on vaccine policy that Kennedy defeated in his confirmation vote last year. For example, Kennedy has only visited HELP once since being confirmed (also to discuss the White House budget), even though Cassidy said the secretary would check in quarterly. His visit…
Traditional explanations of acupuncture focus on local stimulation and endpoint physiological changes, often emphasizing direct acupuncture point and organ relationships. However, such linear relationships overlook the complex neural and immune intermediates involved. With the rapid development of neuroscience and immunology, research on acupuncture control of somatosensory autonomic reflex mechanisms is undergoing a revolution. These discoveries change our perception of the long-standing separation between the nervous and immune systems and require an integrative framework that can explain systemic regulation. In this context, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how acupuncture activates somatosensory autonomic reflexes and modulates immune balance. Based on…
In a new study published in Clinical gastroenterology and hepatologya low FODMAP diet and the antibiotic rifaximin produced similar significant relief in patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). The researchers also looked at distinct characteristics of patients’ gut microbiota to predict whether they would respond to a low FODMAP diet or rifaximin, or whether they would not respond to treatment. Importantly, they discovered that differences in the gut microbiome may help predict which patients will respond to certain treatments. ” Allen Lee, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, first author…
Research published in Rheumatology and autoimmunity challenge the assumption that achieving clinical remission is sufficient in rheumatoid arthritis and show that patient-reported outcomes vary widely by drug class even when disease activity is comparable. Researchers found that patients taking TNF inhibitors reported better energy levels, mood, and mental well-being than those taking older conventional drugs, while IL-6 and JAK inhibitors showed particular benefits for patients’ physical function. These differences persisted even after accounting for how well the underlying inflammation was controlled. This study provides real-world evidence that different drug classes offer distinct benefits across quality of life domains, supporting a…
research in pediatric survey Researchers found that rural and urban children and adolescents tend to experience different mental health problems, with children living in rural areas exhibiting more emotional problems and children living in cities exhibiting more behavioral problems. For the study, researchers analyzed data from 19,711 Chinese students between the ages of 6 and 16 (9,566 in urban areas and 10,145 in rural areas). Of these, 3,003 had a mental disorder. Screening was conducted using the Child Behavior Checklist, followed by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents and a psychiatrist interview. The results showed that children…
Manipulative people use both kindness and gossip as separate tools to control their social circles
People who manipulate their social world through gossip and exclusion are primarily driven by dark personality traits, and even having positive traits typically does nothing to stop this behavior. The researchers found that while acting kindly towards others can slightly reduce the likelihood of engaging in social sabotage, it does not eliminate the underlying effects of malevolence. The results of this study were recently published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. Relational aggression involves intentionally hurting someone’s relationships or social status instead of using physical violence. Examples include spreading malicious rumors, giving the silent treatment, and organizing groups to…
A striking new species of pit viper with a bright grass-green body and amber-like eyes has been discovered in the misty mountains of China’s western Sichuan province. This snake, which blends into its lush surroundings, remained unnoticed for years, hiding in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. Researchers from the Chengdu Institute of Biology and Giant Panda National Park made the discovery while studying wildlife in the rain belt of western China. What they initially believed to be a common species turned out to be an entirely new species. Recognizing the region’s cultural heritage and conservation mission, the research…
Amneal co-CEO Chirag Patel said Wednesday morning that the industry is entering a “golden age of biosimilars” while explaining the company’s motivations for its $1.1 billion acquisition of Kasiv Biosciences. In a merger of neighboring New Jersey-based companies with the bulk of their manufacturing in India, generic drug giant Amneal will acquire biosimilars specialist Kasiv for an upfront payment of $750 million (split in cash and stock to be paid at closing), plus up to $350 million in potential milestones. The acquisition of the 15-year-old privately held company sent Anmir’s stock price up 5% by mid-morning Wednesday. The companies expect…
Labor union rally begins strike, Samsung Biologics records significant revenue increase
Samsung Bio’s business performance will continue to be strong heading into 2026, barring the possibility of an employee strike breaking out behind the scenes of record-high profits. The South Korean CDMO reported first-quarter sales of 1.26 trillion Korean won ($851.9 million), a significant 257.6% year-on-year increase. The company said this strong momentum was driven primarily by the “full capacity operation” of its four manufacturing plants, which resulted in cumulative contract value of $21.4 billion in the quarter, reflecting “continued demand from customers around the world.” “Samsung Biologics achieved stable growth in the first quarter, supported by consistent execution across our…
The sun had not yet come in Photographed from above Port Arthur as residents felt the ground shake. They immediately moved indoors, closed the windows and doors, and sheltered in place until word was received that the explosion at the Valero Port Arthur refinery was under control. The fire, which broke out in late March, contaminated the area with a plume of black chemicals and burned for nearly 10 hours, releasing chemicals into the air for more than 10 days. Incidents like this are not new to residents of Port Arthur, a town on the Texas Gulf Coast between the…
