With significant manufacturing sites already under lockdown in China, CRDMO BioDuro is on a short trip to Taiwan for its latest pharmaceutical raw material production activities. California-based BioDuro has formed a new joint venture with Cenra API Solutions, a long-established Taiwan-based pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturer. The partnership will bring Cenra’s commercial-scale facility in Taipei into BioDuro’s production network, which is split across multiple facilities in mainland China. According to a March 4 press release, BioDuro will leverage its early-stage development know-how, and the final project is expected to provide an end-to-end API from initial development to commercial production. Cenra’s campus…
Armed with funding and acquisitions, Procode AI launches AI-powered RCM for surgical billing
As artificial intelligence in revenue cycle management proliferates, a new startup, Procode AI, has launched from stealth a unique approach to AI-powered RCM for complex procedures and surgical cases. The company has adopted an AI roll-up strategy, acquiring established surgical billing businesses to incorporate AI into their workflows, while also strategically focusing on building an intelligent billing infrastructure for practitioners. Procode AI co-founders Jeff Cripe, a high-tech startup entrepreneur, Kameron Rezadeh, MD, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and James Baez-Silva, an engineer, found that the RCM market was fragmented and did not meet the needs of practitioners facing increased…
Vermont’s only landfill, located in Coventry, is owned and operated by Casella Waste Systems. File photo: Riley Robinson/VTDigger Northeast Saudi accounts for less than one-tenth of Vermont’s total waste, but it pays for all of it, according to locals who live near the state’s only landfill in Coventry. They are asking Congress to protect the lake adjacent to the landfill through bill H.652, which would prohibit the discharge of waste from landfills and other dump sites into Lake Memphremagog, an international body of water that borders both Vermont and the Canadian province of Quebec. “Landfills are out of sight and…

Enhanced myelination may help maintain therapeutic efficacy of psychedelic-assisted PTSD treatment
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized not only by strongly encoded traumatic memories but also by disruptions in the coordination of entire brain networks. New research shows that treatment with psychedelic drugs causes a massive reorganization of brain network dynamics caused by remodeling of myelin, the nerve insulating layer. Discoveries from new research in biological psychiatryA paper published by Elsevier shows that enhancing myelination may be a viable strategy to enhance or maintain the therapeutic effects of psychedelic-assisted treatments for PTSD and related disorders. Psilocybin and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) have rapid clinical effects in patients with PTSD. However, circuit-level stabilization is…
Spending just a few days in a simulated microgravity environment can subtly change the way a woman’s blood clots, according to researchers at Simon Fraser University, raising big questions about health monitoring protocols for astronauts who may spend more than six months in orbit. First reported in 2020, an unexpected blood clot was detected in the jugular vein of a female astronaut on a mission to the International Space Station. Space health research has traditionally been dominated by men, but as the number of female astronauts increases, a new study from SFU and the European Space Agency investigated how microgravity…
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and are considered a priority disease by the World Health Organization. In a new study, researchers at the University of California, Irvine have revealed how subtle chemical changes in the eye’s lens proteins make them more likely to clump together over time, suggesting the early stages of cataract formation. This study biophysical reportfocuses on proteins called crystallins, which help keep the eye’s lens clear. These proteins last a lifetime. But unlike most cells in the body, the lens cannot replace damaged proteins, so chemical changes can accumulate gradually over decades. What surprised…
Standard mental health treatments are often inadequate for adults with autism, study suggests
Recent research published in natural mental health Our findings suggest that when adults with autism receive standard psychological treatments for depression and anxiety, there are mixed outcomes. Some people have shown improvement, while others’ symptoms have remained stable or worsened. The findings show that factors such as ethnicity and daily living difficulties influence the effectiveness of these therapies, highlighting the need for more tailored mental health care. Autistic people are more likely to experience mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety than non-autistic people. They are also more likely to report negative experiences when seeking professional help for these…
Breathing patterns and brain activity become more independent during the deepest sleep.
Are there sleep secrets hidden in the deepest parts of the brain that science has yet to uncover? Hackensack Meridian Team health and its Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI) have published a new detailed study examining the brain and found that, unlike light sleep or quiet wakefulness, breathing patterns and brain activity are more independent of each other during the deepest sleep. This study neuroscience journal In January, they collaborated with a team led by CDI author Dr. Bong Mi Gu, also from Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The research team includes Dr. Korsum Dedar and Elliott Newberg, who…
Welcome to UTHealth Houston’s newsroom series “Ask the Expert.” Our top doctors explore pressing health challenges. This edition covers daylight saving time and setting healthy sleep habits. March brings the promise of warmer weather and longer days. But adjusting to changing clocks can be difficult. Here’s how to maintain good sleep habits as the clocks move forward to March 8th. How can people prepare for clocks moving faster? Because daylight saving shifts occur on weekends, most people can usually accommodate the shifts without feeling pressured into their workday schedules. However, there is strong evidence that sleep deprivation around daylight saving…
