    NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a giant exoplanet hidden in one of the Milky Way’s most studied planetary systems.

    The nearby young star Beta Pictoris was already known to have two giant planets, Beta Pictoris b and Beta Pictoris c. Beta Pictoris b was one of the first exoplanets to be imaged directly. The newly identified Beta Pictoris d increases the number of known planets in this system to three, making Beta Pictoris only the second planetary system known to contain at least three imaged planets.

    However, astronomers did not initially recognize Beta Pictoris d as a bright spot of light. Instead, they identified it through the characteristic chemical signatures of its atmosphere. The researchers say this approach could provide a powerful new way to locate planets around other stars, especially in environments where dust and debris make traditional imaging difficult.

    “This discovery adds a new element to an already fascinating planetary system.” Astrophysics Journal Letter Postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego. “Beta Pictoris has long served as a laboratory for understanding how planetary systems form and evolve, and now we have another planet to help tell that story.”

    Young planetary system near Earth

    Beta Pictoris is approximately 63 light-years from Earth and is estimated to be approximately 23 million years old. Its relative youth and proximity gives astronomers a rare opportunity to observe how newly formed planets interact with the surrounding disk of dust and debris left over from the system’s formation.

    Researchers estimate that Beta Pictoris d has at least twice the mass of Jupiter. Still, it appears to be the smallest of the three known giant planets orbiting this star.

    Computer modeling suggests that the planet is probably moving around Pictoris Beta at a distance of about 30 astronomical units. It is located in an area comparable to Neptune’s position in our solar system. Of the three known planets in this system, Beta Pictoris d has the widest orbit, but it still lies within the inner boundary of the debris disk.

    A planet discovered by chance

    The research team did not use Webb to search for other planets. Pictoris βd appeared unexpectedly when astronomers were using Webb’s NIRSpec to study its atmosphere.

    The scientists used NIRSpec’s Integral Field Unit, an instrument that records both images and spectra on a pixel-by-pixel basis. A spectrum separates light into its component wavelengths, allowing astronomers to study the chemical reactions and motion of distant celestial bodies.

    “We weren’t looking for new planets,” Gibbs said. “We were trying to understand a signal that we already knew existed, and this telltale signal showed up in the data that we weren’t expecting.”

    The researchers expected to see a smooth spectrum produced by light reflecting off the dust, but instead they found a pattern of peaks and valleys. The signal contains carbon monoxide absorption lines arranged in a barcode-like arrangement, a feature commonly expected in the atmospheres of giant planets.

    Spectroscopy also allowed the research team to measure the object’s radial velocity. This describes movement toward or away from the observer. Its speed, location, and relationship to the debris disk were all consistent with what scientists would expect from a planet orbiting Beta Pictoris.

    These measurements helped rule out other possibilities, such as distant background stars or brown dwarfs with carbon monoxide in their atmospheres.

    Chemical evidence supports a hidden world

    “There was an unexpected bright source within the integral field unit’s image processing, but we have learned not to trust bright clumps in images,” said Jean-Baptiste Ruffio, a research scientist at the University of California, San Diego, and principal investigator of the first Webb observation in which the discovery was made. “They could be instrumental artifacts or other structures within the debris disk. By acquiring the spectra at the same time as the images, we were able to quickly confirm our suspicions.”

    The astronomers then conducted follow-up observations using Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) at the request of the director’s discretionary time. These observations detected water vapor and methane, adding further evidence that the object is a planet and revealing more details about its atmosphere.

    This method provided researchers with important advantages over traditional imaging. From their first observations, they were able to not only prove that the object was a planet, but also begin investigating the chemical and physical properties of its atmosphere.

    “The spectrum contains an incredible amount of information,” Rufio says. “You don’t just learn that something is a planet; you immediately start learning about its temperature, chemical reactions, and motion.”

    An independent imaging study also supported this finding. The research was led by Ben Satriev from the University of Edinburgh and Markus Bonse from the European Southern Observatory. Researchers independently verified the existence of Beta pictris d using observations from the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope and Webb’s NIRCam.

    Find planets in the fog of space

    Beta Pictoris d went undetected for many years because it is embedded in one of the brightest debris disks astronomers have ever observed.

    Dust within the disk scatters light from the central star, creating an effect similar to fog. This glare makes it difficult for standard imaging techniques to separate the planet from nearby dust structures and other light sources.

    Webb’s spectroscopic techniques allowed researchers to avoid much of that confusion. Rather than relying solely on the planet’s visible brightness, the scientists isolated a narrow molecular signal that is characteristic of the planet’s atmosphere.

    The presence of Beta Pictoris d may also help astronomers understand the unusual appearance of the system’s debris disk. This disk has a well-defined internal boundary, along with several other structures that are difficult to explain.

    Astronomers had previously proposed that an undiscovered planet similar to Beta Pictoris d could form the disk and give rise to some of its features. This discovery provides researchers with a possible explanation for the disk’s unusual structure.

    A new way to discover exoplanets

    This discovery doesn’t just add a new world to the Beta Pictoris system. This presents a new strategy for detecting exoplanets in complex and dusty environments.

    Beta Pictoris d is the first planet to be directly imaged, discovered primarily through moderate resolution spectroscopy. The results show that astronomers can locate the world by identifying the molecular fingerprints of the atmosphere, rather than relying entirely on traditional coronagraphic images.

    This ability could prove particularly valuable when planets are obscured by bright debris disks or other structures that are difficult to distinguish in regular telescopic images.

    Researchers plan to continue examining Webb’s observations to improve estimates of Beta Pictoris d’s temperature, atmospheric composition, and orbit. These studies could provide an even more detailed view of one of the most well-known planetary systems other than our own.
