A study examining the association between emotional attachment, mentalizing ability, and hypersexual behavior found that among people with high sexual desire, attachment anxiety and avoidance (i.e., attachment anxiety) were associated with hypersexual behavior. People with higher mentalizing abilities were less likely to engage in excessive sexual behavior. The paper was published in. Journal of Sex Research.

Mentalization is the ability to understand one’s own and others’ actions in terms of their underlying thoughts, feelings, intentions, and desires. This ability develops through early attachment relationships in which caregivers help children recognize, label, and regulate their internal states.

However, because caregivers tend to react to their children’s early sexual expressions with discomfort, avoidance, or embarrassment, integrating sexual feelings into this developing sense of self tends to be more difficult. As a result, many people begin to understand and adjust their sexual state more fully only through subsequent relationships and sexual experiences.

Study authors Lynne-Helen Christien Gartner, a researcher at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, and colleagues conducted a study to investigate the link between emotional attachment, mentalizing ability, and hypersexual behavior. They investigated this in a group of people with a high sex drive and a group of people with a low sex drive. Hypersexual behavior refers to persistent, intense, or difficult to control sexual thoughts, urges, or activities that cause significant distress or interfere with daily life, relationships, or responsibilities.

The study participants included 1,895 people, 953 with high sex drive and 942 with low sex drive. Approximately 221 of the participants with high sex drive and 680 of the participants with low sex drive were women. Participants were recruited by a German online panel provider for a large-scale study on mentalizing and sexuality. The researchers focused only on cisgender respondents because the number of transgender and nonbinary respondents was too small to analyze separately.

Participants completed an online survey that included assessments of mentalizing ability and emotional attachment. Participants with low sexual desire also completed an assessment of sexual desire (Female Sexual Function Index or Sexual Desire Survey, depending on gender), and participants with high sexual desire also completed an assessment of hypersexual behavior (Hypersexual Behavior Survey).

Emotional attachment was explained through two traits: attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. Attachment anxiety is the tendency to experience intense fears of rejection and abandonment, accompanied by an excessive need for security and intimacy. Attachment avoidance involves emotional dependence and discomfort with intimacy, leading people to distance themselves or suppress their attachment needs. People who have low levels of both attachment anxiety and avoidance are considered to have secure emotional attachment patterns, whereas people who are high in either avoidance or high anxiety, or both, are considered to have insecure emotional attachment patterns.

The results showed that among participants with high sexual desire, those who were more securely attached tended to have better mentalizing abilities. In other words, people with high levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance tend to have poorer mentalizing abilities. People high in attachment avoidance and anxiety were more likely to engage in hypersexual behavior, and those high in mentalizing ability were less likely to engage in hypersexual behavior. This was true for both men and women.

Among women with low sexual desire, more secure attachment was associated with better mentalizing ability, but mentalizing ability was not associated with sexual desire. Men with high attachment avoidance and low sexual desire tended to have poorer mentalizing abilities, but attachment anxiety and mentalizing abilities were not related in this group.

Among men with low sexual desire, higher attachment anxiety tended to be associated with higher sexual desire, and higher mentalizing abilities were also associated with higher sexual desire. For both men and women with low sexual desire, higher levels of attachment avoidance were associated with lower sexual desire.

Further analyzes revealed that mentalizing ability partially mediated the association between attachment anxiety and hypersexual behavior among participants with high sexual desire of both genders. Among participants with low sexual desire, mentalizing ability partially mediated the negative association between attachment avoidance and sexual desire, but only in men.

“Overall, mentalizing ability appears to be a mechanism linking insecure attachment and hypersexual behavior, but is less central to reduced sexual desire,” the study authors concluded.

This study contributes to the scientific understanding of the role that mentalizing abilities play in people’s sexual behavior. However, it should be noted that the reported associations were mostly weak and all data were based on self-reports. Therefore, it remains possible that reporting bias may have influenced the findings. The cross-sectional nature of the data also prevented the researchers from determining causality.

The paper, “The Role of Attachment Anxiety and Avoidance and Mentalizing Capacity in Dysregulated Sexuality,” was authored by Lynn Helen Christien Gartner, Klaus Michael Leininger, and Pia Bricken.
