Eating habits that most closely match a woman’s existing routine are more effective in reducing postpartum baby weight, especially for mothers in the early postpartum period, new research has found. This study identified key factors influencing meal timing and perceived barriers to different chrononutrition approaches, with one emerging as particularly important: the ability to share dinner as a family. The survey results are: Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Jund), published by Elsevier, is an important step in informing the development of chrono-nutritional interventions for postnatal weight management.

Most mothers do not return to their pre-pregnancy weight after giving birth. This weight is often maintained or even gained, increasing the risk of overweight and obesity, poor cardiometabolic health, and adverse outcomes in future pregnancies.

The postpartum period is a particularly demanding life stage, and it can be difficult for mothers to devote time to traditional weight management approaches, such as keeping food records, counting calories, and attending weight loss counseling sessions. We wanted to explore alternative, low-impact weight management strategies that could promote gentle caloric restriction, weight loss, and postpartum cardiometabolic health. ”

Camille R. Schneider-Worthington, PhD, RDN, LDN, Principal Investigator, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Time-based dietary approaches that align meals with metabolic circadian rhythms, such as chrononutrition, have shown promise for weight management and cardiometabolic health and are growing in popularity. However, little research has focused on meal timing in postpartum women, including mothers’ perceptions of how meal timing has changed after childbirth and their thoughts about different chrononutritional approaches.

This study fills that gap by investigating the perceived determinants of postpartum dietary habits and understanding the feasibility of following different chrononutritional approaches for weight management and cardiometabolic health from the postpartum mother’s perspective.

This study captured postpartum mothers’ perspectives on dietary habits and different time-nutrition strategies through in-depth interviews and surveys of 10 mothers recruited from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital within 6 months of giving birth. To triangulate the data, participants shared their sleep schedules and ranked the weight management approaches discussed from most preferred to least preferred.

    Main findings

    • A weight loss approach tailored to the mother’s existing routine emerged as the most feasible. Infant schedules, child care availability, meal preparation assistance, and partner work hours were common factors influencing eating habits.
    • Family mealtimes, especially shared dinner as a core family activity, were important factors when considering the feasibility of a postpartum chrono-nutrition approach.
    • Participants perceived the chronotrophic bed-stop rule approach (no energy intake within a certain amount of hours before bedtime) and the 10-hour time-restricted eating approach (shortening the daily eating window to a fixed 10 hours) most favorably.
    • The “breakfast like a king, dinner like a pauper” approach (highest calorie intake at breakfast and lowest calorie intake at dinner) was the least preferred approach among this group and was perceived as the most unfeasible.

Dr. Schneider-Worthington says, “I was surprised by the overwhelming dislike of the ‘king’s breakfast, poor man’s dinner’ approach. Rather than setting specific meal start and end times, it redistributes meal sizes so that breakfast is the most plentiful and dinner the least.” It was also the only approach that raised concerns among breastfeeding mothers about how it would affect their milk supply, who may need education to help them. Dispel the notion that a large dinner or nighttime meal is necessary to support nighttime milk production. ”

The researchers noted that while this study was an important first step in understanding the potential feasibility of different time-nutrition methods for postpartum weight management, it was limited by a small and relatively homogeneous sample from the same geographic region. Future studies with larger and more diverse samples are needed to confirm these findings and further inform the development of postpartum-adapted chronotrophic interventions.

Researchers strongly recommend that new mothers interested in a chrononutritional approach discuss this with their health care provider.

“Chrononutrition as a weight loss tool is striking in its simplicity and offers a wide range of options,” concludes Dr. Schneider-Worthington. “For many people, looking at the clock is easier than counting calories or keeping a food diary. This simplicity may be especially helpful in the postpartum period, when mothers are often more focused on caring for their infants and other children than themselves. Time-based eating may offer an easy and potentially achievable strategy to help manage weight, especially during difficult times.”
