    Swipe-based dating apps show strongest relationship with compulsive use and body dissatisfaction

    While swiping may not undermine overall well-being, a new review found that the strongest links cluster around compulsive use, pressure on appearance, and body-related vulnerability.

    In a recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal communication psychologyResearchers synthesized data from 27 peer-reviewed studies with 21,263 participants to assess the mental health correlates of swipe-based dating apps. Findings reveal small to moderate global associations between dating app use and negative psychological outcomes.

    Specifically, this review found that, rather than uniformly affecting all psychological dimensions investigated, dating app engagement showed the strongest association with behavioral dysregulation and concerns about appearance. In contrast, the primary analysis found that the use of these apps did not make a statistically significant difference in participants’ overall life satisfaction or overall happiness.

    This review further identified substantial heterogeneity in the results of previous studies, as well as gaps in mechanistic and longitudinal data. The authors recommend that future studies adopt cross-sectional and longitudinal designs to uncover temporal pathways and inform targeted digital mental health interventions.

    Swipe-based apps like Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, and Hinge are rapidly gaining popularity globally, especially among young people and developed countries. Scientists hypothesize that the shift from in-person love exploration to these digital platforms has reshaped modern intimacy and courtship patterns.

    The pace of finding romance on dating apps is quite fast, even when compared to interactions on traditional social media platforms. The latter features a highly gamified framework that emphasizes visual self-presentation and immediate, quantifiable evaluation.

    As a result, users can be exposed to a continuous loop of instant validation or silent rejection, creating a different psychological environment than traditional face-to-face dating. Unfortunately, while much research has been conducted examining how social networks in general affect mood disorders and self-esteem, the unique psychological effects of dating apps remain fragmented.

    A review on this topic shows that previous literature primarily treats mental health as a unitary concept and assesses isolated symptoms (such as anxiety and self-image) without considering the participants’ overall background. As a result, it remains unclear whether these platforms are associated with a generalizable pattern of decline in user well-being, or whether their affective-behavioral correlates cluster around specific structural weaknesses inherent in dating app design.

    The present systematic review aimed to resolve these persistent empirical ambiguities by utilizing a meta-analytic framework to elucidate the association between dating apps and users’ well-being and behavior. This review collated data from 27 peer-reviewed empirical studies pre-registered with PROSPERO and published from 2012 to April 2025 (total number of participants n = 21,263 adults).

    Summary statistics revealed that the sample population consisted primarily of young adults (mean age = 23.2 years). Participants were predominantly female (67%), followed by males (32%). Sixty-one participants identified as outside the binary construct, approximately 0.3% of the total sample, highlighting the lack of representation of this gender-diverse group in research. Approximately 15% of participants identified as LGBTQ+ or a member of a sexual minority group.

    The meta-analysis used the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Exposure Studies (ROBINS-I) tool to assess the methodological quality of included publications. The outcomes evaluated were categorized into six different theoretically based psychological clusters: 1. Psychological Distress, 2. General Well-Being, 3. Appraisal of Appearance, 4. Physical Pathology, 5. Behavioral Dysregulation, and 6. Interpersonal Hypersensitivity.

    Finally, a cross-classified multilevel meta-analysis model was employed to account for data dependence. Hedges’ g was calculated as the standardized mean difference in the analysis, thereby allowing comparisons between active dating app users and non-users.

    Review the findings

    Meta-analysis demonstrated a small to moderate overall association between dating app use and negative mental health outcomes (g = 0.28, p < 0.001). However, further evaluation identified highly graded domain-specific patterns that emerged when individual clusters were analyzed.

    The strongest association observed was within the behavioral dysregulation cluster (g = 0.44, p < 0.001), indicating that users reported higher levels of measures related to over-involvement, such as compulsive involvement, loss of control, and dependence, which the authors suggest may reflect a reinforcement-driven pattern of use.

    The next largest associations were observed for body pathology and eating disorders (g = 0.32, p < 0.001) and appearance evaluation concerns (g = 0.28, p < 0.001). Notably, women and sexual minority men showed higher vulnerability to body dissatisfaction and appearance-related anxiety.

    Although the effect size was small, interpersonal hypersensitivity (g = 0.28, p < 0.001) and psychological distress (g = 0.25, p < 0.001) also showed an inverse association. Unexpectedly, this analysis failed to identify a statistical association between dating app use and general well-being or positive functioning in the main model (g = 0.10, p = 0.119). However, this cluster became significant after excluding outliers in a sensitivity analysis.

    conclusion

    Current systematic reviews and meta-analyses show that swipe-based dating apps are associated with specific behavioral and self-evaluative vulnerabilities, but do not imply uniform or general psychological harm.

    The authors interpret these findings in relation to the interface design of these apps, which are structurally transactional and prioritize appearance-based validation, which may help explain the association with compulsive swiping and body dissatisfaction, particularly among marginalized groups.

    The review also found that previous research on the topic has relied heavily on cross-sectional surveys, leaving researchers unable to establish whether dating apps are causing these problems or simply attracting vulnerable groups. The authors recommend that long-term prospective follow-up is essential to clarify these temporal pathways.
