    Wormholes are often imagined as tunnels through space or time, shortcuts across the universe. However, this image is based on a misunderstanding of research by physicists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen.

    In 1935, while studying the behavior of particles in regions of extreme gravity, Einstein and Rosen introduced what they called a “bridge,” a mathematical link between two perfectly symmetric copies of spacetime. It was not intended as a path for travel, but as a way to maintain consistency in gravity and quantum physics. It wasn’t until much later that the Einstein-Rosen bridge became associated with wormholes, even though it had little to do with the original idea.

    But in new research, my colleagues and I have shown that the original Einstein-Rosen bridge points to something much stranger and more fundamental than wormholes.

    The puzzle that Einstein and Rosen were working on was never about space travel, but about how quantum fields behave in curved spacetime. Interpreted this way, the Einstein-Rosen Bridge acts as a mirror of space-time, a connection between the two subtle arrows of time.

    Quantum mechanics governs nature at the smallest scales, such as particles, while Einstein’s general theory of relativity applies to gravity and spacetime. Reconciling the two remains one of physics’ most serious challenges. And interestingly, our reinterpretation may provide a way to do this.

    a misunderstood legacy

    The “wormhole” interpretation emerged several decades after Einstein and Rosen’s work, particularly in the late 1980s, when physicists speculated about crossings from one side of space-time to the other.

    But those same analyzes revealed how speculative the idea was. General relativity prohibits such travel. Bridges get pinched faster than light can pass through them, making them impossible to cross. Therefore, the Einstein-Rosen bridge is unstable, unobservable, and is a mathematical structure rather than a portal.

    Nevertheless, the wormhole metaphor flourished in popular culture and speculative theoretical physics. The idea that black holes might be connected to distant regions of the universe or act as time machines has inspired countless papers, books, and films.

    However, there is no observational evidence for macroscopic wormholes, and no convincing theoretical reason to expect wormholes within Einstein’s theory. Speculative extensions of physics, such as exotic forms of matter and modifications to general relativity, have been proposed to support such structures, but they remain untested and highly speculative.

    two arrows of time

    Our recent work reconsiders the Einstein-Rosen bridge puzzle using a modern quantum interpretation of time, building on ideas developed by Sravan Kumar and João Marto.

    Most fundamental physical laws do not distinguish between past and future, or left and right. Even if time or space is reversed in the equation, the law remains valid. Taking these symmetries seriously yields a different interpretation of the Einstein-Rosen bridge.

    Rather than a tunnel through space, it can be understood as two complementary components of a quantum state. For some, time flows forward. On the other hand, it flows backwards from the position reflected in the mirror.

    This symmetry is not a philosophical preference. Once infinity is ruled out, quantum evolution must remain complete and reversible at the microscopic level, even in the presence of gravity.

    “Bridge” refers to the fact that both time elements are needed to describe the complete physical system. Under normal circumstances, physicists ignore the time-reversal component by choosing one arrow of time.

    But near a black hole, or in a universe that is constantly expanding and collapsing, both directions must be included to achieve a consistent quantum description. This is where the Einstein-Rosen bridge naturally arises.

    Solving the information paradox

    At a microscopic level, this bridge allows information to pass across what we see as the event horizon, or point of no return. Information does not disappear. It continues to evolve, but along the opposite lines, reflecting the temporal direction.

    This framework provides a natural solution to the famous black hole information paradox. In 1974, Stephen Hawking showed that black holes can radiate heat and eventually evaporate, apparently erasing all information about anything that falls into it. This contradicts the quantum principle that evolution must conserve information.

    This paradox only arises if we insist on describing the horizon using a single unilateral time arrow extrapolated to infinity. This is an assumption that quantum mechanics itself does not require.

    If the complete quantum description includes both time directions, nothing is actually lost. Information leaves our time direction and reappears along the opposite direction. Completeness and causality are maintained without invoking exotic new physics.

    These ideas are difficult to understand because we are macroscopic beings who only experience time in one direction. At everyday scales, disorder, or entropy, tends to increase. A highly ordered state naturally evolves into a disordered state, but never the other way around. This gives you the arrow of time.

    But quantum mechanics allows for more subtle behavior. Interestingly, evidence of this hidden structure may already exist. The cosmic microwave background radiation, the afterglow of the Big Bang, exhibits a small but persistent asymmetry, a tendency to favor one spatial direction over its mirror image.

    This unusual phenomenon has puzzled cosmologists for two decades. The standard model assigns a very low probability unless a mirror quantum component is included.

    Echoes of the previous universe?

    This painting naturally leads to deeper possibilities. What we call the “Big Bang” may not have been an absolute beginning, but rather a bounce, a quantum transition between two time-reversed stages of cosmic evolution.

    In such a scenario, black holes could act as bridges not only between temporal directions, but also between different cosmological epochs. Our universe could be inside a black hole formed in another parent universe. This could have formed when a closed region of space-time began to collapse, bounce back, and expand, much like the universe we observe today.

    If this diagram is correct, it also provides a way for observers to make decisions. Relics of the pre-bounce stage, such as smaller black holes, may survive the transition and reappear in the expanding universe. Some of the invisible matter we think of as dark matter may actually be made of such relics.

    In this view, the Big Bang evolved from a prior state of contraction. No wormhole required. The bridge is temporal rather than spatial, and the Big Bang is not the beginning but the entrance.

    This reinterpretation of the Einstein-Rosen Bridge offers no intergalactic shortcuts, time travel, sci-fi wormholes or hyperspace. What it offers is even more profound. It provides a consistent quantum picture of gravity where spacetime embodies a balance between opposite directions of time and where our universe may have had a history before the Big Bang.

    It does not overturn Einstein’s theory of relativity or quantum physics, but rather completes them. The next revolution in physics may not bring us faster than light, but it may reveal that deep in the microscopic world and in the bouncing universe, time flows in both directions.conversation
