Today, the World Health Assembly recognized individuals and institutions who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to global health. The six laureates, representing diverse backgrounds and backgrounds, were recognized by Dr. Victor Elias Atala-Rajam of the Dominican Republic, President of the 79th World Health Assembly, representatives of the foundations that have provided these awards for the past 40 years, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
The 2026 awards recognize the six recipients’ remarkable dedication to advancing primary health care, reducing inequalities, and moving the goal of health for all closer to reality. The 2026 Laureates, selected by the WHO Executive Board in February 2026, reflect a shared commitment to improving health outcomes through scientific excellence, innovation and community support. Their work ranges from strengthening primary health systems and promoting disease control to empowering communities and expanding access to essential services for the most vulnerable.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Dr. Lee Jong-wook, the sixth Director-General of the WHO, who passed away suddenly during the World Health Assembly in 2006. One of the awards being presented today, the Dr. Lee Jong-wook Memorial Public Health Award, recognizes his accomplishments and lasting contributions to global health.

Sasakawa Health Prize

Recognized for its pioneering role in strengthening community-based primary health care and empowering underserved populations through community-led health services.
UAE Health Foundation Award
- Dr. Worawit Thongtiwattanasap, Thailand
Recognized for transforming access to health services for rural, stateless, and cross-border populations through outreach services, training, and policy advocacy.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah of Kuwait Health Promotion Foundation receives award for promoting healthy aging

Recognized for promoting and developing innovative community-based approaches to caring for older adults. - SingHealth, Singapore
Recognized for cross-sector, community-centered, integrated strategies that support healthy aging and age-friendly environments.
Dr. Lee Jong Wook Memorial Public Health Award
- Professor Mohammad Abul Faiz, Bangladesh
He was recognized for his lifelong contributions to public health, particularly in tackling diseases that affect rural, poor, and marginalized populations.
Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion
- Dr. Amr Mohamed Qandeel, Egypt
Recognized for leadership in building resilient, prevention-oriented public health systems that integrate disease control, digital innovation, and equity.
