Headway, a platform that connects patients with insured mental health providers, announced Tuesday that it has acquired the team at artificial intelligence company Tej.
The company said in an announcement that it plans to integrate the team into broader engineering and product development to ensure that AI is “developed responsibly while improving the experience for patients and healthcare professionals.”
“Today’s mental health system makes it harder than expected for patients to find the right support and for clinicians to stay focused on their jobs,” Headway founder and CEO Andrew Adams said in a statement. “We believe that AI can help improve the infrastructure around care, allowing clinicians to spend less time dealing with complex situations and more time with patients. The team at Tezi has extensive experience building systems where humans and AI work together, and we’re excited to bring that expertise to Headway as we continue to build a more accessible and effective mental health system.”
This acquisition is aimed at continuing to strengthen our mental health infrastructure. It supports clinicians in their care and makes it easier for patients to receive support.
The team joining Headway includes Tezi co-founder Raghavendra Prahbu, who will serve as VP of Engineering. Prabhu previously built engineering systems at Google, Microsoft, and Twitter.
“AI has the potential to remove many of the frictions that exist in today’s healthcare systems,” Prabhu said in a statement. “What stands out about Headway is that we are committed to thoughtfully applying AI in ways that enhance the human side of care. We are excited to help patients and caregivers more easily navigate mental health care.”
The Tezi acquisition isn’t Headway’s first AI investment. In September, it announced expanded EHR features, including AI-assisted notes based on provider input. This feature is also useful for formatting notes for insurance companies.
Headway operates in all 50 states and Washington, DC, and more than 70,000 providers have used the platform since its launch in 2019.
